Even Harvard Find the Media Biased

By INVESTOR'S BUSINESS DAILY | Posted Thursday, November 01, 2007 4:30 PM PT

Journalism: The debate is over. A consensus has been reached. On global warming? No, on how Democrats are favored on television, radio and in the newspapers.

Just like so many reports before it, a joint survey by the Project for Excellence in Journalism and Harvard's Joan Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics and Public Policy — hardly a bastion of conservative orthodoxy — found that in covering the current presidential race, the media are sympathetic to Democrats and hostile to Republicans.

Democrats are not only favored in the tone of the coverage. They get more coverage period. This is particularly evident on morning news shows, which "produced almost twice as many stories (51% to 27%) focused on Democratic candidates than on Republicans."

The most flagrant bias, however, was found in newspapers. In reviewing front-page coverage in 11 newspapers, the study found the tone positive in nearly six times as many stories about Democrats as it was negative

Psssht no new news there. I can't stand most of tv these days specifically for that reason. Good thing other Americans are actually starting to catch on though.

My grandma told me it's because most of the media is owned and controlled by jewish people, who are predominately almost democratic. Not sure if that part is true, but interesting none-the-less.

Soros owns a good portion of it.

And here I was going to leave DGN for awhile, having hit my 1500 posts, and knowing that i need to focus on my work more.

As I'm loggin out, Gaf, your post title caught my eye DAMN YOU GAF!!

<shakes fist in silly dramatic fashion :stuart: >

I would be curious to look at the parameters of this study and their methodology.

That said, IF there was truth in this, it would be bacuse the media are sheep that like to folow the winners of the day, not get to the bottom of issues and stories.

The Iraq war is unpopular.

The Dems wiped the floor with the Repubs asses in the last election.

Bush is hugely unpopular.

People are fed up with the GOP right now.

The party itself is confused and does not have a clear leader for the president.

They're in disarray, and their biggest fundraiser is not one of their own, but rather, hatred for Hilary Clinton.

For the first time in decades, the Dems are arctually raising MORE money than GOP.

In MANY ways they are in the crapper.

SO, it would be natural that a loser party in disarray with no clear coalition candidate would get less favorable coverage than a strong, energized, party that has a clear frontrunner and is on the good side of many pressing issues of the day, most notably Iraq.

It is ALSO important to note that there were SEVERAL studies that came out after BOTH the 2004 and ESPECIALLY the 2000 election that said the media favored George W Bush.

He was a much better story than Al Gore, esp. because Bush courted the media, was much more folksy and charming, AND, after 9/11 Bush got a blow job from the press JUST for getting up in the morning every day.

In fact, I think the press is feeling a little embarassment that they gave Iraq a free pass for so long.

If the GOP sweeps in next year like they did in 1994, you'll see the EXACT same wonderful coverage for them.

This is even taking you on your word that this one, singular study is gospel.

I'm refraining from flaming you or your Grandma, though I have no idea why.

I seriously am so offended I'm shaking as I type this.

Let me make something really fucking clear.

I hardly ever agree with Gaf, but as angry as we used to get in these discussions, it was ALWAYS about our differences of political opinion.

And I respected him for them. I still do (even if he's wrong all the time :p--I kid I kid)

Your Grandma's viewpoints are disgustingly anti-semitic and vile.

And that you give it credence makes it all the more sick

(I really liked you. Had a good time at reaper's, and always respected you because you spoke your mind despite being in the political minority-------

But there is nothing to respect about your posting)

There's been this bullshit about the Jew-run media since the beginning of time.

Every other problem is scapegoated on the Jews, why not this???

I'm literally dumbfounded that a reasonably intelligent person like yourself would fall prey to such knee-jerk

prejudice.

Why dont you tell me how we run all the banks and killed Jesus while you're at it?

Rupert fucking Murdock just bought out the Wall Street Journal, making him the most successful media magnate in the world

he already runs the most popular news network

the EXTREMELY right wing biased Fox News, as wells as zillions of other media out lets around the world

He's Australian.

Then there's the previous Kingpin: Ted Turner

a redneck from Georgia.

So, who runs the media???????????

A southerner and a conservative Australian!!!

I'm soo absolutely sickened by this.

Now, if youll excuse me, I'm loggin out now, to go to a shabbat dinner with some friends from my shul at their house.

We'll be lighting candles, eating good food, and thanking G-d for the bountiful meal.

Maybe you should do the same,

pray to become a little more enlightened.

I'd imagine that would be the Christian thing to do.

Disregarding all the above because I really am kinda speechless...

Maybe it's because people overall are fed up with Republicans in general. This administration hasn't done a lot to endear themselves to their own party, for pete's sake.

I'm sure when Reagan was in office the bias was in favor of things Republican. Because from what I hear and have experienced, things were pretty good under him.

I know republicans and conservatives on this board will disagree with anyone who has anything negative to say about Bush and his administration. But the truth is, they have pissed off a lot of people both outside and within their own party. And this probably includes plenty of people who make the decisions behind what is presented by the media in general.

Let a shitty democrat be in office a few years, and I'm sure the bias will swing 180.

A guy at church who's an editor at the Oakland press put it this way: A good portion of the media ARE liberals. They're the one's who question authority and dig for answers for answers sake, not because they want to make the other guy look bad. Also... The conservatives have a pretty good lock on business. Let the liberals have the media... kinda balances things out.

I mean really it's stupid to be prejudice against anyone anyway...I base judgement on actions not color/faith/nationality/etc. Quite honestly the reason behind dem. media bias is a mystery to me, I posted it as like a joke thing, but I guess reading it back over again I could see how people thought I was being serious. Sorry I didn't state it differently, I wasn't trying to bash or be rude or anything.

Actually...I never even put two and two together like that. Damn, I'm getting old or something, but it does balance out. The only thing I'd slightly object to is the fact that media is so widespread and everyone is exposed to it and is influenced by it. Business? Not so outrightedly (it's there but people don't live by it as they do with TV).

Hey, when your done being offended... Soros owns more of the media than Murdock and Soros doesn;t even try to hide his bias.

2 things

1. First of all Soros, is a politcal activist and an invester NOT the head of NewsCorp(FoxNews NY Post,) and one of the few chief executives of any multinational media corporations who controls his empire by reason of his own stake in it, held via a family trust LIKE MURDOCK DOES.

2. I will be done being offended when you exhume the 6 million corpses beneath the ground in Poland and Germany, re-animate my people, re-attach the hair that was cut out and thrown in a big room, and melt down the gold bars and jewelry that was made from their tooth fillings, place it back in their mouths, and then reunite me with members of my family.

Unfortunately, they still won't have skin, because it was burned off and made into soap, which I would imagine is already used up, if the Germans keep half as clean as I do.

Disregarding all the above because I really am kinda speechless...

WELL PUT! :respect: (And your take on the media was right on the $$ too)

that was a little rough brutha.

If that's Gramma's perspective, so be it - she did not neccesarily assign negativity to Jews with that idea, and actually I've heard this same sort of thing before, so Gramma got the idea somewhere, nonetheless....its not a vile opinion, its just a beleif. And I dont know (havent the slightest idea) but what if Gramma's point of view actually had some semblence of truth to it by the numbers? Would that then, reduce the degree of vileness? For example when people use african american crime statistics as numerical evidence in support of their ideas....people line up on either side rather emotionally.

and Chernobyl....I thought that was rather gutsy that you posted it, I'm assuming you knew you'd get flack, so therefore I give you points for making a non PC statement: :respect:

By the way Chernobyl you also get ten cool points for having your Christianity thrown at you as a measuring stick from an outside source, which some might argue was a blatant and vile anti christian prejuducial left hook. In my case I think its just a counter opinion with just a hint of personal rancor, but some might see it that way.

Anyway the media is a controlled thing, and I think so just because I do, which is a pretty sad basis for an argument but a hunch nonetheless.

I don't think it was any less rough than saying Mexicans are Lazy, or that black people like Koolade. But as you said... Racism is about perspective I suppose.

I think, all media coverage needs to be taken with a grain of salt.

I think people need to think with their own minds and try see both sides of a story that is covered.

I also think it is fucked up how political parties and politicians try to manipulate peoples' minds with media outlets.

I would also have to agree that there is liberal bias in the media.

You took the words outta my mouth too on that, as I stated above, I did not aim to mean anything offensive by my post, it was just a correlation between two things (and then the fact that I was bullshitting about it in the first place no less, as I had already stated).

Had I said "the networks are controlled by jewish people...and they need to DIE" or something along those lines...it would have been massively offensive. I mean shit, not only would I have pissed off everyone else, I would have even pissed off myself with a statement like that. But how we got from a one line statement about jewish people being associated with media networks to this:

2. I will be done being offended when you exhume the 6 million corpses beneath the ground in Poland and Germany, re-animate my people, re-attach the hair that was cut out and thrown in a big room, and melt down the gold bars and jewelry that was made from their tooth fillings, place it back in their mouths, and then reunite me with members of my family.

...is beyond me entirely. Sorry if it came across to you that way, The Eternal. Especially since I'm 1/8 Jewish (on my gramma's side of the family no less) and wouldn't be here without that ancestry in my blood and the fact that my grandpa and his brother both served in WWII to save our people...oooh a TWIIIISST! (nobody ever sees that part coming, I guess likes to keep people guessing)

Business influences everything!!!!!! Look at how they manipulate people through advertising. They invest millions trying to lobby for laws that benefit them. Etc etc etc...

Huh...so it is a pretty even playing field, in retrospect.

What is interesting to me is how it got that way in the first place. Not so much repubs getting business power, but dems having more influence in the media. More charisma maybe? That could be it...I mean when most people think of repubs they think of W.O.R.M.s (white old rich men), which isn't necessarily uhmm a tv worthy kind of image to most people, unless we're talking Fox News here. I guess it shall remain...a mystery.

No no...that's why I felt I had to explain myself, it was my bad, I'm one of those people who joke but you can't really tell when I'm kidding, kinda like Chris Rock or something. That's why I read your guys' posts and damn near shat myself 'cause I thought you thought I was being for serious.

But you, Eternal, and Phee are wrong on one thing...I'm damn ignorant.

I'm thinking I'm going to be moving to AZ, soon! Can't wait! I friggin' love it here! The heat doesn't bother me at all and the best part? NO SNOW!!! (S.N.O.W. - Shit  No One Wants)   Been staying in Bullhead City where the kids and grandkids live. Next, we're going to the wife's cousin's which is a ways North of Kingman, in the middle of nowhere, where we actually plan to move.   I really like Bullhead. It's a nice little town. Not overcrowded like Colorado Springs has become, at all. Very light traffic, reasonable prices on everything, low taxes, etc. The river offers a lot to do, with a lot of beaches and campgrounds all around it.   But yeah even though we've been over 110º-115º F just about every day,  I can handle it!  What I can't handle anymore, is snow and being cold. Just tired of it. Give me the desert over a blizzard any day!

Nope, we wasn't doing anything. I didn't want to go by myself.  I ended up doing karaoke here. It would of been a perfect day to go, though.
