OMG.

Jon started work at 7:00 this morning.

And I just talked to him. it's 5:40. And he is driving from Northville right now, to Novi, then to Rochester Hills, then Auburn Hills, then Belleville, and I think I forgot one in there somewhere.

And he could possibly get more calls.

Don't get me wrong. The overtime is great. We both feel that way when that check comes in.

But gads. I can't believe how hard he has to work when on call with this job.

And today was just the first of 7 days on call.

This only happens once every 8 weeks. Thank Heavens. But he does work overtime whenever it's available during the "regular" weeks.

I wish I could drive around with him. If he had been able to pick me up, I would. I used to when he was on call at the last place he worked. I bring beadwork, books, magazines, etc. And shop in the places he's working at.

Poor guy. I hope he doesn't get any more calls.

I'm going to have to make some friends who can come over on nights like this.

Sweetie, just think of the paycheck he'll get.

I was alone on Thanksgiving because Odims had to work 6am til noon, but that changed into 6am til 6pm. He'll be working on Christmas too I think.

Hey, if the moneys good....

You can always call me once in awhile, and you can come by, or we can go to R.O that night. Tonight, I have dinner already half done, so next time?

I think that'd be cool. :)

Yeah, the money is going to be great. But I like the guy to have a break, you know?

At least I was able to meet up with him when he was working on a place in Lincoln Park earlier. I bandaged a hurt finger, and brought him some food. I wanted to surprise him with some hand warmers, but the Dunhams over there ended up out of business and Sears didn't have anything.

Tomorrow, we'll be better prepared. I'm going to get a lot of food ready for him to take, a warming cooler, some drinks, and I bought two different kinds of hand warmers for him to take with him and try out.

Damn - Just remembered. Gotta track down his thermal undershirt... pops away to the closet from hell

You know FC, I know what to do on lonely "nights like this."

You know how I "love the ladies."

OMG, that was so bad.

I just couldn't resist.

(For those of you watching at home, this was character acting-- and for my next trick...)

too visual for suggestions that I do A.N.Y.T.H.I.N.G. in, with, by, around, near, because of, in spite of, or to ohster.

Shudder. Goes fetal.

Anyway...

I went to K-Mart nearby and got him a thermal undershirt (already gotzis pantz), lunchmeat and cheese to pack him sammiches, some different disposable heat packs, and a pair of leather weight lifter's fingerless gloves that just might do the trick with the heat packs tucked in back.

I'm gonna make him wake me up with him in the morning, make him breakfast, pack him lunch, and brew up a scalding hot thermos of tomato soup to take with him. If he drank coffee, I'd do that, too.

If he ends up on an all-day-all-nighter tomorrow, he'll be prepared.

He didn't get in until 10:45 last night.

OMG. I hope he doesn't have too many nights like that.

I thought he'd be all pissy and cranky. But he was just fine - and digging the fact that he basically made an extra $200 - after taxes.

Today, he called to say he was on his way home from Lansing at 2:45. But called back 5 minutes later to say he's on his way out to Rochester Hills.

Such is the nature of this job.

Anyway, I made him breakfast this morning, a couple sandwiches for lunch with some chips & Powerade, and a big piping-hot thermos of Tomato soup.

And he said the hand warmers are working out great.

So he's at least a lot better fed & more comfortable today. :)

FC this biggest flag for me is what your concerns are. Your worried about his sleep, eating habits, warmth and mental peace (offering to ride around w/ him). To me that is such a huge statement on how good for each other you two are. You aren't whining about nobody being around to dote on you, your not bragging about the huge check he's going to pull in, I believe I've said this before, but you two are so lucky and I'm happy for you.

Awww, thanks very much. :)

Jon may be 10 years my junior. But he's old-fashioned and chivalrous in that he likes being the bread-winner. I was never a career woman, and I did work part-time when we first got together, and then worked a self-managed eBay business for the first few years of our marriage.

But I didn't have a problem with an arrangment that basically comprised of him making the main income, and me staying home and housekeeping. I like domestic work, LOVE cooking, and though I'm not into having children myself, I definitely have a strong maternal instinct that makes me thrive on "taking care" of him. He loves coming home to a clean and pleasant home, the smell of healthy & tasty cooking, and a wife with a smile on her face that isn't of the "Stepford Wives" variety.

I don't overly baby him. I'm not his mother to follow around behind him and pick up crap he could just as easily put away himself. And if I wanted to go out tomorrow and get a job, it's not like he'd be all overbearing and overpossive and not "let" me. I still do some occasional eBay sales to bring in some extra income, like the $300 worth of stuff I auctioned off last week. And next summer, I anticipate being muchly over the clinical depression that's kept me pretty unmotivated & sedentary for a few years, and I look forward to doing more steady eBay work again.

But I do like this arrangement. I felt real guilty over the past few years. Due to the depression, I really wasn't keeping up my side of the arrangement. He has ended up doing most of the cleaning, laundry, and cooking. But he did so understanding what I've been going through and knowing that I'd have done the same for him if roles had been reversed.

It's nice that people recognize what we are for each other. We've had our problems, our times when we got a bit selfish and didn't put the relationship first. But overall, I think we'll be happy and grey together. :)

Sigh.

He got home about 5:30.

And at 6:45, got a call, and is on his way out to Flint. :(

But another tech called and needs a part from him, and turns out this guy lives about 30 minutes from Flint. Jon's gonna see if they can trade jobs - send this guy out to Flint and Jon'll finish in Dearborn.

Hope they work it out that way.
