Fierce Critter Posted December 3, 2007 Posted December 3, 2007 Jon has trouble wearing your average pair of gloves on the job. He has to switch constantly from picking up glass & steel doors, to working with wiring, to using small screwdrivers, etc. He has a pair of gloves that are fingerless with a mitten part that folds back, but they're too bulky. He got a new pair of work gloves that fit more snugly and have grip pads, but they're still a pain when he has to do work with smaller objects. I went to Gander Mountain and Dick's Sporting Goods today. I wasn't finding anything promising. I picked up a couple of those red-velvet box-shaped hand warmers that have coal sticks in them. he can at least keep those in his pockets and warm 'em up once in a while. And I also got a package of disposable heat packets in case he can figure out a way to maybe wear lighter fingerless gloves with one of those in there. I've gone to cabela's website, and checked out eBay. I'm not finding much different than I've already seen. Someone needs to invent something that straps onto the back of the hand, that has a little pocket where a heat pack can be stashed. Hell, I'm thinking about buying a cheap pair of gloves, some velcro or elastic and trying to make something up myself. Has anyone seen anything I might not be finding?
Der Nister Posted December 3, 2007 Posted December 3, 2007 Has he tried kevlar gloves? I worked in a metal stamping plant years ago and wore them, they're thin but strong. Maybe they might help him if he dosesn't know about them already. If that doesn't help then I'm stummped.
odims_sphere Posted December 3, 2007 Posted December 3, 2007 When I was working construction all we ever wore were the simple cheap brown jersey gloves. They just warm enough so that you don't notice the bitter cold, and thin enough to give you the dexterity you need to do your work. Plus they're so cheap you can start a new pair every week!
Head Wreck Posted December 3, 2007 Posted December 3, 2007 i have some miscelaneus leather gloves that are lined but also fit very very close (rare, i have sshovel palms and short fingers, moreso since i started training) i find they do well, so its just a case imho of finding gloves that fit, well, like a glove. as to glass and steel, might want to think about a kevlar midlayer to protect his hands a bit more
torn asunder Posted December 4, 2007 Posted December 4, 2007 more layers on his core, and light gloves - the warmer your core is, the more blood it can "pump out" to the extremities. if your core gets cold, the first thing it does is direct bloodflow to keep the internal organs warm. (it's a survival mechanism...)
Fierce Critter Posted December 4, 2007 Author Posted December 4, 2007 Thanks, all. He's been layering, but I went and bought him a thermal undershirt 'cause he had the pants, but not the shirt. So he's covered there. He usually wears a polo under a long-sleeved shirt or flannel. Mentioned in another thread that I also picked up a pair of fingerless leather weight lifting gloves at K-mart. They might be grippy enough for picking up the big stuff, cut enough to allow for digit dexterity, and a hand warmer pack can be tucked into the back. I'll have him check it all out tonight to see if he thinks that might work.
Homicidalheathen Posted December 4, 2007 Posted December 4, 2007 Warm potatoes in the pockets..... There are these packets too my kids got at school when they were in band......it stays warm on its own. Sporting goods stores have them.
Shade Everdark Posted December 4, 2007 Posted December 4, 2007 I don't know if they'd be sturdy enough for what Jon's job requires, but I wanted to throw in a recommendation for Fox gloves. Fox Racing - Check under MX or Bike gear I bought a pair of Fox gloves the last time I went snowboarding, and they were sturdy enough to last through an entire day of boarding on hard-packed, crystallized snow, and with even a modicum of physical activity, they keep the hands warm (but mine, at least, aren't waterproof, it just warms the wet quickly). Give 'em a look-see, maybe they'll suit what you need.
Fierce Critter Posted December 4, 2007 Author Posted December 4, 2007 That's VERY interesting. Which pair, in particular, do you have? Their glove selection
Kit Kat P Posted December 4, 2007 Posted December 4, 2007 I split part of the seam on my gf's turtleneck at the neck and added some velcro so that she could add a heat pak into the top part just below where she folds it. She says it really helps when it drops down and the icy fog rolls in.
Shade Everdark Posted December 4, 2007 Posted December 4, 2007 They don't sell the gloves I have, anymore (I bought them almost ten years ago already, eep). The closest design to the ones I own is probably this one: Dirtpaw
