Homicidalheathen Posted December 18, 2007 Author Posted December 18, 2007 Bush pinata creates controversy in high school, smashed anyway Sunday, April 22 2007 @ 10:25 AM PDT Contributed by: Anonymous Views: 910 Yesterday, April 21st, a benefit concert to raise funds for the American Anti-Slavery group and raise awareness of modern day slavery was held at Moorestown Friends School in Moorestown, NJ. Called Emancipation Rocklamation, this event is held annually at the school, but in recent years has shifted in focus from genuine but reformist concern with the issue of slavery to simply a ska concert. Interested in calling attention to all crimes against humanity, and the slavery of not just those focred into servitude all over the world but of wage laborers and prisoners as well, anarchists, anti-capitalists and members of the school's chapter of Students for a Democratic Society set up a table full of anarchist propaganda, posters, zines, and other pamphlets. Next to the table, an effigy of George W. Bush was strung up over a basketball hoop. The atmosphere of the show was festive and well-spirited, as many came over to snap pictures of their president strung up and to engage us in conversation about our literature. Within an hour two conservative students--who held positions in student government--came over to attack the anarchists' positions and presence, telling them that they would use their authority to prevent us from organizing on campus again. They took issue especially with the Bush pinata, demanding that it be removed. Tthose present refused and they engaged in a verbal skirmish with the capitalists until they left. Within half an hour of the exchange, a radical faculty member and supporter arrived at the table to tell us that one of the school's administrators had folded in the face of the students who objected and had decided the effigy had to be removed. The administator in question never directly approached any anarchist or SDS member, but rather sent a fellow radical to avoid hostility. The radical teacher advised students to either remove the effigy and use their cooperation as leverage in a future free-speech battle, or to smash it anyway. It was decided that Bush had to be smashed anyway and that no decision made by the administation to attack the ability of students to express themselves on campus would pass so easily as that. Bush was removed from the basketball hoop and taken outside where a large group of students had assembled. Anarchists and SDS members yelled "Fighting terrorism starts at home!" and "Bash Bush!" and carried George to the parking lot behind school. A crowd of more than 60 people soon followed! Within minutes the pinata was strung up and completely destroyed. Candy, condoms, and deception dollars (fake currency slandered with conspiracy theory) flew out. Less than an hour later a wrapper from one of these condoms was observed nearby...bashing your president can promote safe sex! An administator who had observed the large crowd assembling in the parking lot confronted three anarchists who remained to clean up and said that the issue would not go unadressed. His tone was confrontational. Two of the three students present were male, while the other was a female who had attended the private school most of her life and was well known to the administrator. His comments were addressed directly to the male students who were new to the school, highlighting the administration's inconsistency in dealing with discipline and the class and race tensions in this town once named the "best place to live in America" by Money magazine. SDS members are committed to defending their actions and the liberation and freedom of all people in the pending discussion of the issue of censorship on campus.
