McCain To Send Self Back To Vietnamese POW Camp To Revitalize Campaign

"On Saturday at approximately 2:40 a.m. I will fly over the capital city of Hanoi and have my plane's right wing blown off by a Russian missile," said McCain, adding that the force of the ejection from an aging A-4 Skyhawk should render him unconscious and break both of his arms and "preferably [his] right leg." "I will then be taken to a bug- and rat-infested cell where, with both nobility and grace, I will suffer the worst forms of human indignities."

Ron Paul for me, simply because he's 100% crazy.

McCain is a grown-up that is against torture, will tell you what he thinks, even if it isn't what you want to hear, and would make a good President.

McCain is also 71 years old, with a history of skin cancer. He is a decent man, but the Presidency is the most stressful job in America, if not the world. His age and his injuries and health history worry me.

Counter intuitively, I am voting for Ron Paul, a 72 year old man. Of course, it is highly unlikely that Ron Paul will win the Republican nomination...

I don't think anyone got the joke yet...

I got the joke... I just didn't find it all that funny...

Please tell me you've read the Oinion before...

I have. It's rather boring.

I feel like a complete idiot, but will someone explain the joke to me. All I read was the little snitbit that was there. I thought it was for real.

During the Viet Nam war, Navy Pilot McCain was shot down and he spent years in a prison camp. He was able to use this part of his life to become a Senator, along with actually being a good man. Now, with his campaign faltering, The Onion decided to parody the darkest part of his life to make fun of McCain.

I didn't find that funny.

Yes, but that's what the Onion does!

And I find it interesting that actual combat vets who could find themselves in that type of situation found it funny.

As for me I put people into two camps:

1. People that "get" the Onion

2. And people that don't.

Thank you Odims for posting this.

And for everyone else, go to my profile, "my website" is actually the Onion.

Read it

Love it

Live it!

And like the H-Dog used to say (RIP brotha) don't let wackass accuntz receivable bitches be hatin' you for pouring out a 40 for the men that sacrificed, jus' because you be allup in tha Onion.

Peace Out!

Where the f%$^ is Phee when you need him???

Yeah, Yeah, it's funny because its bigger than a normal sized hat!

I know that the Oinon was one of the things I would wait for my friend from WI to get in a care package on my first tour. We would hang up parts of the paper in our SWA HUT.

bit like private eye magazine over here (except the eye doesn't normally make the basis of the ridicule up, and that's worrying)

I'm a longtime reader of The Onion just with so much disrespect for public figures in general, and the military specifically, i prefer not to see this stuff in public. Privately i might chuckle at it, but publicly i just find it ... uninteresting when the same space could be used for something useful. Has nothing to do with "DGN" its just a personal preference.

In a different situation i can see the humor, just the endless jokes in lieu of actual political, historical or social discussion (especially in this forum) somehow struck me as more insulting than funny. I generally am good for a chuckle at "black comedy" just the way this one was framed doesn't do it for me.

Having followed his story directly , and that of many other POWs , along with being tired of jokes about politics, rather than actual political discussion. I doubt the majority of actually tortured and maimed PoWs would find this all that funny. Its a particularly serious issue that isn't likely to extract much comedy. There is always someone that finds humor in everything, regardless if they "are actually pows" or not.

Some subjects are just not worth hurting people nor making light of for the sake of "a joke".

Not that it COULDNT be funny, its just a pet peeve of mine. The never-ending mindless humor jokes (which i am a grandmaster of in real life and constantly make wise ass remarks) online , especially about this sort of subject just dont do it for me.

Kind of like logging on and reading a joke about my grandfather having to kill one more german to qualify for the silver star that he got, helping him get a job. It could be funny i guess, just doesn't strike me a such.

Yeah I kinda agree, though I do like alot of as you called, "black humor" it is a very touchy and fine line to walk. Sometimes you can crack a joke that is tasteless and offensive as all hell, and everyone gets a huge kick out of it, and other times, you're bastardized for it. I will say though I didn't quite find that specific article in the onion particularly humorous as I couldn't ever imagine what it may be like being in a POW camp... I am going by an ASSUMPTION here that it may have been written with the possibility that the writer felt McCain's party has been riding his POW experience for the main intention to gain voters. I've not really kept up with McCain's path to gain Presidency, but that could be the reason. I can see the humor in it, however it just doesn't hit that specific nerve with me to find it funny. I'm not offended by it either though to be fair.

Sometimes an experience is so traumatic, that if you don't laugh at it, it could break you in two. I think of it like that.

In some cases you are right... there's been a few hardships in my life I've had to deal with, I wouldn't exactly say they were traumatic to me, however finding a morbid light side dark sense of humor in the situation to chuckle at does make it easier to go through or get over

That's my camp right there. That's my whole outlook on life, really.

I mean sure you get sad about it, everyone cries and has pain, but in between those tears and sorrows what do you do? You laugh, just laugh about it, nothing in life is really too serious when you look at the grand scheme of everything because nothing and nobody is permanent. On a long enough time line the survival rate for everyone drops to zero. It's silly to take anything too seriously.

Yeah, I know, I kinda paraphased Garden State slightly, sue me, it's an awesome movie and I didn't realize I did it until I typed it in. But...now that I typed it, it's staying

...damn....and I somehow snuck in Fight Club too

First cheesy obvious jokes the other day, day after that referencing everything to TV shows randomly, and now pulling out movie quotes even when they're not remotely from the same genre...I'm on SOME kinda roll this week

Now that I know what the "joke" is referring to I dont find it all that humorous.

But to be fair, I dont knock anyone who does think that it is funny.
