Fierce Critter Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 I have both MSIE that I use via AOL and FireFox. Lately, DGN is loading reaaaaaaaaaaaaaallly slow for me on MSIE, and often timing out when I go to post. I just brought it up in FireFox, and it's not having the same issue. Thoughts? And please, none of the usual "well, just use FireFox!!!! It's the beez-knees!" I know, I know. But I have reasons for using AOL 99% of the time, and switching to FireFox is kinda inconvenient. Para Bellum Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 I had horrid problems with board slowdown as well as login problems with IE. No issues with FF. Weird.
Msterbeau Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 I use FF and the board has been fickle always. Sometimes it's no prob... others... Crappy and slow.
jadnifer Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 I use Mozilla...is that FF. Well whatever it is sometimes the board jumps right into action and sometimes it is SO slow that I dont bother with and come back to it later!
know_buddy_kares Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 I did notice the board was fluctuating between molases speed and light speed today... And I use Firefox all the time. So perhaps when you switched to Firefox, is when it picked up speed again. And Jad, yes, Mozilla and Firefox are of the same. There's a reason for the different names but I forgot why.. but just look at the top of your browser in the blue template with the logo in the top left hand corner, it should give the title of the webpage you are viewing, and at the end say Mozilla Firefox.
DarkVampire Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 Its always slow for me. I suspect its all of these bloody images.
Troy Spiral (13) Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 Its unlikely its a particular browser unless there's some computer-specific problems. In terms of "overall" performance that is a cost issue due to the budget of DGN. (this second line is a response to some of the replies , not the topic post) From a browser to browser perspective it could be a very large cache (known to slow down systems with limited memory) in one browser and a very small cache in another. It could be cache at all in one (and thus every image has to re-load every time) nothing being stored in the short-term (cache) memory. In a minor way IE is known as a larger system hog than FF , but that wouldn't be a significant cause for overall slowdown for general browsing from page to page. Every post I've seen in the IPS admin forums regarding speed issues (the software author / hosting company DGN runs on) almost always points to 1. too many modifications (not an issue with DGN) or 2. (most common) hosting / server / internet slowdowns not specific to the users computer or web browser. Dial up users are especially prone to notice these slowdowns. Cable/DSL connections are so common these days i sometimes think we forget there still are dial up users, which are very prone to notice slowdowns in comparison. Unfortunately due to the low-cost "shared" hosting we have to have we'll never get ebay/amazon type reliability/speed. A dedicated server would solve 90% of the speed issues (but a decent dedicated hosting setup with a decent pipe is in the $150+ per month range at a bare-bones minimum) Late at night / early morning is a fairly common time to expect slowdowns as that's when hosts typically run diagnostics / backups / etc , not all of which can run on shared hosting "budget" servers without impacting performance. (or at least thats the conventional wisdom) If i had to guess, I'd say about 60% of the time DGN runes at amazon/ebay responsiveness level, if DGN is "always" (responding to other comments not particularly the OP) slow but other websites are not "always" slow then thats ghosts. I flip-flop from IE to FF regularly and connect from two separate computers / ISPs fairly regularly. (not that this means anything other than i try to keep on top of the two browswers that between the two 95% + of all users use)

Mozilla is sort of the 'under the hood' engine that Firefox runs on. Its possible your not using FF, but unlikely, most all Mozilla based users these days are using Firefox. It'll say in the titlebar of the browser usually soemthing like -DetroitGothic.net - Mozilla Firefox- up at the top of your browser right now. You can also go to help > about in the menu and it will tell you what your using.
Daevion Posted January 6, 2008 Posted January 6, 2008 FF! only occasional slowdown here and there.....I recall IE being the same....but I'm on wi-fi so maybe there is slowdown from that too.
