It can be pretty complex , but generally your IP address (Internet Protocol Address: basicly a street address for each device on the internet (usually a computer network card)). It's accurate down to the zipcode level regardless if you use a proxy server or not. Sometimes it can be masked a bit, or confused and they use things called geolocation/triangualtion and other such stuff based on how you get routed to a given Internet access point to "guess" at the location if its not immediately apparent.

Generally a proxy server keeps your info private from a given website operation, but there's not really such thing as true "anonymous web browsing" (from the perspective of the computer your using) since the Internet would have no clue where to send the data if the computer you were using were truly anonymous.

Some network resource, somewhere in the OSI chain knows were the computer (generally) is connecting from, via one of many locating schemes (some of which i have no idea about)

This stuff here is based on google analytics which you could get a PhD in, and still not fully understand it all.

Theres tons of other data in there too like what web browser people are using, what resolution they have their monitors at etc.

Notice ONE eastside city  It's a conspiracy I tell you! I'm surprised it's Sterling Heights, didn't realize how many DGNers lived there (it's like a city or two away from me).

Posted

Theres a lot of lurkers that dont actually post (or even have accounts) im pretty convinced, based on feedback i get in real life and such. *shakes fist at lurkers*

Also many people say they read DGN for awhile before they ever posted or made an account, which is partly why i view a lot of "unknown" people as "DGNers" even though i have no clue who they are.

I think the low eastsider count really is just a population issue. Theres a lot more people west of detroit than there is north.

One curiosity is that the city of detroit proper, wasn't even in the top 25. I think the last time i did this it was like number 1 or 2 or something.

Berkley , CA???

I'm further south by about 2-3 hours, but i did tell a few people about this site at New Years.

There's a Berkley here in Michigan :)

I don't like to think I'm in an inactive city, just that I'm blazing a trail for others to follow...

That may be true, but here's another undisputable fact.

The highest number of characters/post typed from one unique user in the past three years ,

comes from an office in Lansing, MI

I'd ask to see the statistics... but in your case I'll make an exception.

Rock on Sterling Hts. I am glad I could be part of representing the East Side. (This must mean I'm on my way to becoming a spam master. Watch out Phee.)

I think the Royal Oak people are coming up as either Troy or Berkley - I'm only a couple of miles away from each

Don't burst my bubble, dude. ;)

That is really weird! I can't even think of hardly anyone in Berkley on here, but I could be wrong. Especially since Berkley is like Oakland County's Fraser (i.e. ridiculously small ).

Hmmm, I'm thinking Bean Water might be right in that they're lumping Royal Oak and Berkley together since they're right next door to each other.

i've lived in 3 different cities since i started posting on the troy spiral/dgn boards and none of mine are up there... i guess i will always be part of an inactive city

This 👆 definitely goes with what I said in my other post - getting old sucks. Seems like *everything* takes longer and takes more energy out of me than it used to. Really need to work on my diet and exercise, I've found the older I get, the more important those things have really become...

Well we were supposed to leave last night, but life has a way of making plans for you. I'm about to get up and get ready to go on our vacation. Had and still have a lot to do.  Not easy to just up and leave a ranch with a lot of animals and things that need taken care of. We even have people here to watch and tend things while we're gone, but still.   I had to change the radiator in my car before we leave - got that done last night. Took a lot more out of me than I thought it would, so by the time I finished I had little energy for anything else. Today I just have a couple more quick things to do on the car, like cleaning it and packing stuff. Couple of minor things to do around the ranch today, as well.   I figure we should be on the road this evening sometime. I'm looking forward to it. We're going to see the wife's side of the family, people I actually like,  in Vegas and AZ. Should only be gone for a few days, maybe a week. Going to the Grand Canyon and Lake Mead and all kinds of stuff in between, so I'm pretty stoked. I LOVE the Southwest.   Wish me luck that my car survives the desert! (Hence new radiator) 🤠👍

Sometimes sleep can be a scary thing.  I passed out so hard at 4:54pm today.  Yesterday wiped me out with rentals, appointments and helping a lost dog get back home.  Fortunately, I found him on Facebook and contacted the owners and he was picked up before nightfall.  But I think I totally overdid it and paid for it today in the middle of handling business.  Thankfully it was some work at home stuff.   I definitely do not like being that kind of tired.  It's like the World could end and I'd wake up afterwards trying to find out what happened.
