......i don't think i would EVER be dumb or slow enough to fall for this.

My mother in law, hell I don't worry about her......she is still smart as a whip and quick on her feet.....eats her ice cream plain, (vanilla only lol) and sews her own clothes.

I love that woman. But if you got a older person in the area maybe they should see this.

Cause my mom is slow and blind and would probably let the guy in.....dunno. I hope and I am like my mother in law when i get old.

Residents warned to be on lookout for con man

'Dapper Dan' typically talks way into homes, then snoops and steals

By Gordon Wilczynski

A smooth-talking man who dresses well and is being called "Dapper Dan" by police managed to talk his way into a home in St. Clair Shores and left a few minutes later after stealing more than $200, police said.

The incident occurred in the 11 Mile and Harper area early Tuesday afternoon, according to Shores Detective Clint Rice. The man only spent 15 to 20 minutes in the home talking to a woman he had never met as though they were lifelong friends.

The man, Rice said, is believed to be the same person who duped several Warren women out of hundreds of dollars and jewelry last summer.

"He's pretty clever," said Rice. "The man had some personal information about his victim and really caught her off guard."

He did the same thing in Warren that he did in St. Clair Shores, according to Warren Detective Mark Christian. He acted as though he knew the woman and then stole money and jewelry.

The man typically claims he knows his targets, Christian said. He manages to get inside for coffee and asks to use the bathroom, but searches the house for money and jewelry.

Rice said the man who committed the robbery Tuesday rang the woman's doorbell and introduced himself. He said he lived down the street, told the victim he previously met her and said he knows "so and so" and only uses first names.

"He doesn't use a last name so his victim would be able to identify it," said Rice. "He is well-groomed, clean-shaven, very articulate, very calm and confident."

Rice said the man sat down and talked to the 82-year-old victim about anything that came into his mind, such as the weather, news and politics. He then asked to use the bathroom several times while scoping out the house.

Rice said the man saw where the victim kept her purse and wallet and also found a briefcase. Moments after he used the bathroom he told the woman he had better get going.

The victim, who is single, soon realized her money was missing and called police.

Similar incidents have been reported by police in Eastpointe, Roseville, Detroit, Livonia and Redford.

The man is white, 5 feet 10 inches tall, 170 pounds with distinctive white hair. He is in his early 70s, police said.

In the middle of one incident last summer the man used the cellular telephone of two elderly sisters in Livonia and posed as a Warren police officer in trying to convince a woman to drop her criminal complaint.

Anyone with information about the man is asked to call Shores police at (586) 445-5305.
