A | A | A The family of a man who died in August after police used a Taser to subdue him have filed a lawsuit against a Macomb County community and five officers involved.

The suit alleges police in Shelby Township violated the civil rights of 49-year-old Steven Spears by striking him with Tasers, and beating and suffocating him while they were restraining him.

The Detroit Free Press says the family seeks more than $75,000 in U.S. District Court in Detroit.

Police say they found Spears running through traffic wearing only his underwear. They say they used the Taser gun to subdue him with an electrical shock.

He lost consciousness and was pronounced dead at a local hospital. A medical examiner later ruled Tasers were not a factor in Spears' death.

The use of tasers with cops has gotten way out of control. There's a good amount of footage of taser deaths on the internet, usually when there's more than enough cops to deal with the situation without resorting to anything. Police really don't need the damn things to make arrests.

Just because they have them doesnt necessarily mean that they have to use them.

And just because he was in his underwear. I understand that he was in traffic, but that had to be some major tasering to kill him.
