Onyx Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 Interesting. Some will likely use this to proclaim the evils of the internet. The thing is though, a person with this tendency can get addicted to almost anything. The key to a healthy happy life is always in finding a balance.

(To things other then substances.) There are times I'm on the internet that feel exactly the same. Some will use this as a crutch. Some will use it as the key to unlocking a problem. Some will use it to denounce everything under the sun...
Troy Spiral (13) Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 I agree with the above sentiments, i think most thoughtful people (and me too despite my lack of thought hah) would agree. In this context there though , that is professional psychiatric discussions, i think they are clear on the idea that addictive personalities could get addicted to anything. That most with such problems probably have other underlying issues rather than anything that is "only" "because of the internet". The case being made here is that its a specific type of addiction theoretically distinct from a more general addiction, thus (perhaps) needing a specific definition in the next addition of the DSM with its own peculiarities.
Fierce Critter Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 I am only too familiar with what it is to have an addictive personality. I'm dealing with that with a family member right now. If it's not food, it's alcohol. If it's not alcohol, it's the internet. If it's not the internet, it's X. If it's not X, it's Z. It never stops. Without intervention. And it SUCKS.
Destroit Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 I'm addicted to everything I come into contact with, it's ridiculous. Someday I'll probably just up and overdose on life.
Burrich1 Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 So does this mean I can be diagnosed with a dehabilating psychological disorder causing me to be unable to go to work, collect SSI, and sit around at home all day and play on the internet?

You'd probably have to be so addicted that you are hospitalized and restrained from Internet access to recover from your psychotic break... The easier way is just to become the server-admin guy that just monitors the server room and basically do the same thing but actually get enough money to pay the bills, unfortunately for some even that sort of work isn't viable. You definitely don't want to be on SSI. SSI is enough money to wipe your ass with and hope to leech off the kindness of others to actually have a life occasionally and/or move into a cardboard box that has a mailbox, cancel the phone, car, and Internet access because you cant afford it anymore without said caretakers/roommates. That is the good parts. Then wait... until the depression for being such a leech on society finally gets to be too much and you decide to save the taxpayers the trouble.
Homicidalheathen Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 Nah, it can't happen. Trust me, I have been trying for awhile now lol! You'll just end up havin more fun. The thing with the internet is it sometimes takes place of real human interreaction and thats a bad thing. You need to be able to go out to a club and walk up to someone and start a conversation. I practice that at least twice a month to keep myself in check. I'm addicted to everything I come into contact with, it's ridiculous. Someday I'll probably just up and overdose on life.

I didn't mean to make a quib about SSI, or anyone who'se ever been on it. My dark sence of circular irony just got the better of me.
Scales Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 Oh, I smell bullshit. Internet and gaming "addiction" supposedly only exists under someone with an addictive personality. Routine is interchangeable with addiction, in this anti-drug sense of addiction people are just as much addicted to the the good and bad activities implied within their own routines. Without routine their is a considerable lack of focus or ability to follow through and set goals, which coincides with attention disorders thankfully treatable through drug and insurance companies. This article suggests to me that if your not addicted to something that needs fixing then you have an attention disorder that needs fixing. China has a dominative government and South Korea has North Korea on it's ass, it's not hard understanding why people want to radically escape their sector of the world through the internet; to me it's more of a social result of conditions. There isn't any motivation to fix the systems because people are too cozy, so it automatically leads into the idea that it's better just to tack on new problems and the drugs that solve them.
