Msterbeau Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 Work started filtering our web connection a couple months ago. They filter the usual but there's a lot of stuff (Design blogs, useful photography and design websites, Flicker ferchrisake!!) that we can't get to that have legitimate uses for me and the other designers. We've gone through the standard route and the IT bossman is being completely unresponsive. So... I'm going to set up a private proxy for us to use on my own machine here at home. I did a little research and reading on pluses, minuses of various ways to enable us to have unrestricted access. This looks like the simplest and best overall: http://dresstosurvive.wordpress.com/2007/0...proxy-for-os-x/ Any experts want to share advice on doing this?
Dubh Aingeal Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 That should work, I had done something similar at my old job. Just remember that if you have a real PITA for your IT Admin, and your firewall on the corp network is set up correctly, its very possible for him to block applications from getting out (say ssh) of the corporate network. Packet filtering can be a god-send for the admins and a royal pita for those trying to get around those pesky firewalls. But if you can ssh out then you should be good to go.

I get along quite well with the couple local IT guys but their bosses are down in Kentucky and I don't know them well... not sure how things are set up and I don't trust them enough to ask. If they figure out what I'm doing I have very legitimate reasons for it, so I'm not real worried about getting in trouble.
SuZQZ Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 You can try just using this site at work... Some folks who have run into sites being blocked at work have had no problem using this site to access things like MySpace, etc. 2Hide Proxy

Seems like those would be at the top of the filter list... ??

Could be at some places, but I've "heard" that at places where you would think it would be definitely blocked, it's not and folks in the know can get out to sites they really want to get to. *wink, wink* The trick is to not keep going out to it over and over and over and to open it and leave it open and browse from within it. That way it doesn't pop up on a list and raise a flag.

I noticed that we get our IP addresses dynamically at work. Every time I log in it's different. Was hoping it was static so I could just put the number in my server config file so only I would have access. *sigh*

Easy way to find out the IP the world sees is to go to: MyIP The IP you get is what the world sees as you.

Msterbeau Posted March 28, 2008 Author Posted March 28, 2008 What about something like this? YouOS No dice.
Dubh Aingeal Posted March 29, 2008 Posted March 29, 2008 Have you had the chance to try out the actual tunneling via ssh yet? Or was that a no go as well?
