This Seems To Be A Growing Trend In America

Here and there I have been reading alot of stories of people commiting petty crimes to go to jail,3 hots and a cot, most are homeless, out of work,so IMO many think that the jail will take care of them, this is happening all over, the main cause is probably the economy, just wonder how long this bs will be going on,unfortunately us taxpayers have to foot the bill, which sucks.it will probably get worse as the whole nation goes through a recession.

of course there are probably other reasons.

Dunno about that... altho I have no trouble believing it 'cos times are HARD... but for some time there's been a trend where homeless, mentally ill people wander into hospital ERs just 'cos they need a meal and shelter... seen it happen a couple times, AFA I can tell the docs try to get them fed and come up with some plausible reason to keep them overnight.

I've thought about that. While prison doesn't seem like a good idea, a county lockup during a bad cold snap would be a lot better than sleeping on the street. The economy is so bad right now, I shudder to think what next winter will bring.

A lot of these people are older, single men who see themselves with little or no prospects.

One of the reasons they feel that way is because the idea of a strong community is pretty much dead in this country (this board is one of only a few exceptions).

America is all about being an individual, at the Expense of said individual. I enjoy my independence and my freedom to be who I want, but my support system is pretty small, if strong. If I fall into financial difficulty, even if it's through no fault of my own, I'm screwed if I don't qualify for unemployment or if I haven't saved much money. And most people don't earn the kind of wages I do, and I'm single with no kids so my overhead is very low. The majority of the lower and middle class, and lower-middle class are struggling to get by. And that's just the financial aspect.

I'm all for creating a mass network of communities who promise to house, feed, clothe and comfort people within their own community for a certain amount of time until the person in need can get back on their feet. I don't advocate this for people out to take advantage of the system, but I believe that most people are good and that they'll blossom if only they are surrounded by love and kindness for a time. I would so love this community mindset to set in, and some ethnicities already follow it.

I was homeless for 4 years in my late teens and early 20s and I never Once in every shelter I went to, saw anyone of Asian or Indian descent. Not once. Those ethnicities take care of their family and the people within their ethnic group. What I want is to take those principles and apply them to a color-blind standard country and world-wide.

I believe in survival of the fittest to some extent, but I also believe that because I was gifted with a conscience I am duty-bound to help those who can't always make it on their own. Otherwise what's the point of living? To watch my brothers and sisters fall like dominos because I didn't feel like making small sacrifices to help?

This country throws away it's elderly and even the middle aged now due to our rabid desire for youth and beauty, I want to reverse that trend by creating positive, loving communities that talk to each other and support each other.

I can't imagine anyone being so far at the end of their rope that they commit a crime to stay in jail. Jails are so lonely, violent and unsafe. I wish I could help everyone who felt the need to go that far.

End of rant.

it depends perhaps they just hustle the people to much for money.

yet there in such bad health that hiring them for labor jobs for the city whouldnt be to good. perhaps smaller jobs could help. either way petty crimes shouldnt be dealt with jail time. that wont solve much for those who have no family and little friends.
