Miley Cyrus - Much Ado About Nothing?

You know, upon taking a second, closer, look at the picture, she looks scared. She's hunched over and clutching the sheet really close to her chest. There's trepidation on her face(there's also a stray hair on her upper lip that at first glance looks like a moustache, but that's beside the point). To me, the look on her face says; I didn't really want to do this in the first place.

But maybe that's the vestigial mother-gene I have in me acting up.

As a photographer... I can tell you, it's easy to capture emotions that really aren't present.

As both a photographer and a father of soon-to-be teenage daughters, I have mixed feelings. If one of mine asked me to do something like this, I would think long and hard before I let them. There would need to be a good explanation. And it would be kept private except for close friends. I keep all media until they're 18. But if the request came from other then them... no way. Ever. Part of what makes Mileys situation worse is her celebrity status. It almost guarantees the images will be seen by a wide audience... which I think is an important distinction. 15 is still young, though... Probably too young for most.

i could see more skin from underage girls in bikinis at the beach.

it's a bare back ffs, you act like she's showing crotch.

there is nothing sexual, sensual, erotic, or arousing about that shot. take it from me, an absolute pervert.

Well I wouldn't let my kid do it until she was 16.

But thats me.

And they STILL dont wear bikinis....but they are weird ass goths. (how's that happen???)

They dress like this so they dont get tan.....gotta as they say 'preserve the paley whiteness'

Thing is, a girl of pre adolescence should be able to explore and express herself freely in this way on her own, not with her parents pushing........if she bugs and bugs you for the cute little skirt or tight pants.....maybe one day you eventually give in and......

She is walking down the street and some 65 yr old man leers at her and she never wears it again.

THAT shouldn't happen. I have NEVER leered at a say 12 yr old boy........and I am a woman pervert.

There are just way to many perverts these days and now girls can't express themselves in that way anymore, safely and comfortably.

Hell I am all for going beyond age differences but there has to be a line someplace.......

My kid works with a girl who is 16...some 75 yr old man came onto her the other day up at old country buffet.......that is sooo gross! Poor kid was traumatized. When he found out she was just in high school he laughed and said oh ok I will ask you out again in 2 yrs....what a nutcase!

And that is why one person's "art" is another's trash. We will never all agree on what is art.

As she is 15, her parents would have had to given the final stamp of approval for this project. Yes, I am sure it is an honor to some people to be photographed by Ms. Leibovitz but most of her subjects are adults and the photo sessions are pretty daring versus tame from what I have seen of her past works. You also get to look at test shots, so wouldn't these have had to have been approved by someone in Ms. Cyrus' entourage? Most teenagers don't read Vanity Fair. Vanity Fair knows this issue will and is being bought by her fans, and she has plenty of them. The more controversial the topic, the more sales. Greed doesn't give a damn about the aftermath. The bottom line is she is just a child, her parents have already done way too much damage. It probably seemed like a great idea at the time.

I agree with everyone here, but I fear that by everyone talking about it so much, it makes it even worse.

Bill O Reilly did one of his "Look at how the moral fabric of this country is unravelling" speeches.

He went on and on, while showing the same pictures he was supposedly revolted at over and over again.

We have this wink-wink obsession at getting titillated by the same images that we're supposedly offended by, or at least the media thinks we do, because they keep showing them and getting ratings off it.

OK, this is a totally clean picture, and yet it really creeps me out. They look they're advertising for a father-daughter swingers party.
