Bare-bottom Prom Invite Went Too Far

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Thirteen members of a high school lacrosse team have been disciplined for baring their bottoms on which was written a prom invitation from one player to a girl.

Carolyn Campbell, a senior at Huron High School, accepted the invitation to go to the prom with fellow senior Kristoff Wennersten.

The varsity lacrosse players displayed the question, "Will You Go To The Prom With Me? Yes or No?" on their bottoms, which they bared during a junior varsity game last Thursday.

Officials suspended the 13 players for an undetermined number of games and ordered them to perform 20 hours of community service. They also were suspended from school for one day.

"Inappropriate is inappropriate," school athletic director Dottie Davis told The Ann Arbor News. "It disrespects women, and that's the clear message we need to have the students understand — what may be fun to them isn't necessarily fun to everyone else."

Campbell accepted the invitation by patting the back of the player who displayed the word "Yes."

"People get pretty creative with prom. Anyone who's done anything has been pretty outlandish," she said. "This is pretty epic, I would say. I didn't think it would become this big of a deal."

Wennersten said he understood the decision to discipline him and his teammates, adding, "I enjoyed every bit of it."

Convincing twelve other guys to show their butts to a woman that could either be horribly offended or really amused? That's not disrespecting "women"... that's incredible charisma.

Of course, it IS Ann Arbor, where women, no matter how much they dominate men, will always be "minorities"...

And I like to think of myself as a feminist...

Although I think that quite a wonderfully original idea to ask someone out, I would ask a feminist like yourself, what you meant when you make the claim that in Ann Arbor women "dominate" men?

As, I'll be disappearing for awhile, I'll take my answer off the air.

Well, it's a grey area... there is, of course, genuine sexual harassment in Ann Arbor, and then there is a saucy joke overheard that can be used to threaten and intimidate a man. I, of course am not suggesting that Ann Arbor is some bastion of man-haters, but a man-hater could live in Ann Arbor quite comfortably.

I think, in this case, the school district acted appropriately. A lacrosse team represents the entire school, and public nudity of minors... well, one can't be too careful.

However, on a case by case basis, I believe, from anecdotal evidence, that Ann Arbor would be more fertile ground for gender intimidation by women on men.

It's all about balance. I don't know exactly what the balance is, but in my opinion, Ann Arbor does not have it.

I agree about Ann Arbor. From what I recall (and it's been a while, admittedly) it seems likely to have evolved into that kind of place.

I guess the school district did what they had to... but jeez... people need to lighten the fuck up. Now, if they'd all unzipped and written the invitation in the snow, that'd be different. But asses aren't intimidating- just goofy & funny.
