Two people I know gave up good job ops this year for the sake of keeping their weird hair.

It kinda makes me mad cause they are always complaining about money and are not artists per se'

Both are in the art industry but have to deal with corporate higher ups at times.

Personally I would just submit and subdue

I have had many friend with the same issue.....

I myself am able to get away with 'being Me' at work, but I am very fortunate.....

People need to accept the fact that we live in a society that is not as tolerant as we may like.....

So if they don't want to 'submit' to 'the man', then shut up and starve.....Or start a business.....

Right now, I'm lucky enough to be in a somewhat technical position, where they don't really care. But granted, the weirdest I have is the bright red hair.....

I guess it depends on what's more important to you, having a well-paying job, or your personal style.

On one hand, if you can tell the atmosphere of a job is going to be too conservative for you and you know you won't fit in, maybe it's a good idea not to take that job.

I wish I had known how conservative my last employers were when I hired in. Those of you who've seen me: I do not have any tattoos, I do not have any piercings, other than 2 normal holes in my ears, I do not dye my hair weird colors like pink or green, or shave it into a mohawk or anything. It never occured to me that the way I dressed would be a problem for them. They complained because I wore all black (as in, a black sweater, black corduroys and black dress shoes), they complained because I wore a skirt that came about and inch above my knees, with tights and boots, they'd give me weird looks every time I changed my hair color, which varied between different shades of red and blond, never once did I use a color that does not occur in nature. The only time they did seem happy was when I wore these horrible, not-me-at-all preppy outfits I'd expect to see on my grandma, and I felt hideous. I never felt like I fit in at that job, and my boss never seemed to warm up to me. I kind of wish I had never gone to work there.

Anyway, back on topic, if compromising to take a job is going to make you unhappy, then you shouldn't do it, but you have to live with the consequences. You can't complain that you can't find a job or are broke, because standing up for your principals was more important.

On the other hand, refusing to take a job that is great in every other way simply because you have to take out your nose ring for a few hours a day, or wash the blue dye out of your hair during the week, seems pretty silly to me.

wow thats pretty bad.

I had a boss get mad about me voting democrat when bush ran the first time....I lie now and just say I dont vote when asked.

Another about being pagan, so now I just will lie and say I am not very religeous...

But yah I got rid of the blue hair. For now.

When any place asks you on who you voted for,and what religion you are,is pretty invasive when it comes to privacy.

I'll vote for whoever I want to,and believe in whatever I want to,stay out of my personal life.at least that bs does not occur in my line of work.almost everyone is agnostic, and they don't like the Bush administration.

I hope their purple mohawks can keep the heat turned on.

you know...it depends on the company....when I was talking to Railroad execs everyday...I wore torn blue-jeans and black shirts...caps with skulls n the such....no-one cared as long as I knew what I was talking about...had a quick mind, and got the job done.

as a line-cook...as long as your not making it SEVERELY outragious...like 4 foot high blue mohawks...they really don't care...long as there is a wall between you and the customers...so the ppl buying the food can't see ya...

I'm hoping to go in next week for a decently powerful position in media...and I'm going in jeans and a t-shirt.,.why?

A: Clothes don't define you....don't go outragious...but make sure it's the personality, etc that they see...not your suit n tie.

B: I don't own a suit n tie..haven't for a few years now....so I have to make the most of what I got and hope to sweep them off their feet because what they DO is in the same industry, somewhat, that I do...

I'm so bummed out because recently I took my lip piercing out :cry . It was nothing to do with my job. I asked my boss if it was acceptable to get one in the 1st place she said, she was fine with it. So I find out that the lady that runs the Veterinary Program that I am enrolling for, will not accept you in the interview if you have weird hair color or face piercings.

It's flipping school. I understand if we where working with large animals yes that would be a working hazard, but were not. WE ARE WORKING WITH MICE!!! Hello .. what is a mouse going to do to you head butt you and knock your teeth out... I swear people need to get over themselves and THEIR WAY of self presentation. It's a shame to have to lose such intellectual people as ourselves, and hire someone who just looks presentable and have no clue what they are doing.

I dyed my hair back to black for the Army and for school.

Everyday for school, I take out all of my earings, and tuck my nose ring in. Same for Army.

It's really not that hard to do. So you can't be "yourself" at work. Does it really matter? There's only two people you need to impress at work.

1.) Yourself. Prove to yourself what you are made of.

2.) Your boss. That person will always be watching and making sure you are doing your job, and doing it well.

If your hair, and metal for your body is more important that making sure you don't loose your house, then you deserve to loose it.

You can always take a vacation and wear your metal, show your tats and dye your hair. But you can't always get your job back. Or get a second chance on a first impression.

My program at school has a similar dress code: Navy scrubs, white lab coat, white shoes with no markings on them, no visible tattoos, no piercings other than one stud per ear, no nailpolish, no unusual haircolor or distracting make-up.

It seems too strict, and at first I was annoyed that I had to buy all that stuff, but, as the director of my program explained to us the first day, schools are supposed to prepare you for what it'll be like on the job, and some employers really are that strict. They're doing it to try to make sure that when you are ready to go to interviews, you already have a good idea of what people will expect from you, appearance-wise.

And, while I agree that it's unfair to overlook someone in an interview because of piercings or tattoos or weird hair or whatever, in the long run, if you show up to an interview dressed that way, you're really only hurting yourself. It's kind of like showing up to an interview wearing a shirt with a big stain on the front. Sure, you are probably an intelligent person and a hard worker who just happens to have a stain on your shirt, but first impressions are based on looks. If your interviewer doesn't like the way you look, he likely has enough other candidates to choose from that he can hire someone who he thinks looks more professional. That's just how things are.

my take on this - conform to get the job, prove your worth, then grow/put everything back, one at a time. (ok, maybe not purple hair, but...)

it's worked for me!

I really only have what I have because at the moment, I can. I have more "conservative" office clothes i can wear if i need to, and if i need to dye a regular red over this one, i can and will. Im just glad i dont have to. :p You do what you gotta do to make money.

Yes you do.. I mean my boss is pretty young and has some tattoos her self, so she understands. However if you worked at a Vet's and have different color hair/piercings you would be fired or not even hired. I understand the reason completely. It does not make it right to judge a book by it's cover.

Most likely scenario.. a gorgeous clean cut normal girl works at a Vet's office. The owner asks her a question and she totally makes something up .. rather than saying I don't know let me ask the Veterinarian. Our clients always ask for my opinion because they know that I am at a level that my answer is stable, and I'm not pulling stuff out of my @$$.

I don't know why it's not normal to have at least different color hair?

I understand facial piercings can drive some people off but the hair.. that's a bit shallow. It's just a color.

My hair is under my hat,and I wear uniforms at the shop, basically they do not care as long as you do your work and do it well, also if you look blue collar presentable they never say a thing.

Due to my job as a secretary I have had to become a wigger.

NO...not those asshole white kids who went to Cranbrook for high school and think they're from Southwest Detroit or something...

I mean wigger...someone who makes wigs.

That's how I get around with having crazy hair: It's not real.

There's very creative (and lucrative if you make falls/wigs) ways to get around the presentation thing...that's simply what I do.

It is exhausting though, I will say.

And for anyone who was wondering, I'm actually VERY blonde. Like angel blonde...and I HATE blonde, that's why I keep covering it up or dying it . I don't dye it anymore just because that stuff can cause cancer and make your hair start to fall out. So I'm back to my au natural CRAP blonde.

Oh...I also just take the lip ring out. When I first got it pierced I just kept the post in my cheek and stuck it through every so often when nobody was looking, just to make sure it wouldn't close.

Vegetable based hair dye does none of these things...and you would not have to bleach first...

(just tryin' to help)

or you can always use Henna.. its all natural and it's actually good for your hair to put that on. It comes in various colors especially my fav. red ^_^ "Lustrous Henna hair colors, hair dye for men and women is a true example of a 100% natural formulation. Lustrous Henna is non toxic, hypoallergenic, does not contain Ammonia, Peroxide, PPD, or Synthetic dyes." . They have it at Sally's Beauty Supply for I think $5

It comes in BLACK...and when it gets 'shabby' you can wash it REALLY good with SUPER HOT water and dish soap...or shaving cream (dries it out a bit)...and dye it pretty for the 'long weekend' or what ever...

List of names:

Punky Colour

Manic Panic

Adore

They don't even smell bad...& I would L-ov-E to help...so would O_M_G...
