Does seniority mean anything these days

Where I work at,the do not go by seniority,instead its how well you do,and tardyness,and production amounts.Now there are several ppl that do very good and have been here for several years,and there are one or two that are never putting out good parts and are always walking away from their machines,which to me is BS, since they have been here longer than me and never get in trouble,this is where I do not agree with seniority,IMO if you do the job correctly and put out good parts you get to keep your job,but you should not be able to keep your job if you are always walking away from your work area and never getting shit done on time,then you should get fired,and i d not care how long you have been here.IMOshare your thoughts.

Yeah, I'm definitely of the opinion that it's your work ethic, and merit that should get you farther, not how long you've been there. Usually you'd think this should go hand in hand, but it doesn't and that's a shame.

The time you spend out of your life serving a company damn well should matter. If you do your job properly, follow the conduct set forth by your company to the letter and are a good employee that means more though, in my opinion. What good are you if you are there all the time and have been for a long time just fucking off? Those are the people that need to be fired and the issue is and often can be; if the company goes strictly by seniority many times they can't fire these lazy asses. With many factory's these days, seniority doesn't mean shit anymore.

People who take advantage of seniority have made unions a waste...just because you have been there longer doesn't mean you can slack off now....ya know?

Too many people who take advantage ruin it for the rest of us.

It's unfortunate that what should happen, isn't usually what does happen -- in terms of reward and/or punishment. Grrrr.

Also, playing the game and who you know or kiss up to seems more important. Neither of which do I subscribe to.

with VERY little extra on your check...

and LIKE it!!!

and if not...you can TRAIN your own REPLACEMENT!!!

Seniority is very significant at my job.

When we pick vacation weeks for the year, whether or not we get the ones we pick, is determined by seniority.

Whenever there is a situation where someone needs to be called in to work, the person who gets the call, is determined by seniority, unless there are volunteers.

every six months we get to bid on what days off we want, that is determined by seniority.

when business is slow, and management decides to lay someone off for the day, that person is chosen by seniority.

All of this has to do with the fact that we're Teamsters though.

Unfortunately it seems the only time seniority comes into play where I work is when they're going to hand out buyout packages.

There are some areas, like vacation time, where I think it's fair to go by seniority, but as far as who gets hired, fired or promoted I think it should be solely based on job performance.

If you are not in a Union, seniority means exactly Jack and Shit. Some non-union jobs give senority lip service and even have a system for things like when you can take your vacation and such... but over all you work performance is used more than how long you hafve owrked there.

What sux is when there s strike you have no choice but to go along,UAW is known all too well for this,at least the American Axle Strike is finally over,whats sad is anyone who did not want to strike had to go along with it anyway.

And you have companies like Honda (I think it was Honda) who say, "Should we open our new factory in Detroit where there are unions who are striking all the time, or Alabama which is a right-to-work state? Let's go to Alabama." And we wonder why our economy sucks.

That is EXACTLY it!!!! Well with the bonus of it being a bit easier getting time off.. lol
