Tombstone

The victim's name and condition were not released. Authorities said she suffered a head injury and was taken by ambulance to a local hospital.

Rockford police and fire departments responded to the call shortly before 1:30 p.m., Lt. Scott Mazur said.

The events leading up to the headstone falling were unclear, although Rockford City Manager Michael Young said students were applying pressure to the gravestones and using crayons to rub imprints of the stones onto paper.

"I've never been aware of anything like this before," Young said. "I understand that (following the accident) she was awake and just kind of surprised about what happened."

Young said the marker is in an older section of the cemetery, next to a large tree.

"So whether or not the tree grew and might have tipped it a little bit, I'm not sure," he said. "But I know the kids were in and around the gravesites and touching the tombstones. Whether a bunch of kids pushed it or what happened, we're still trying to find out."

It is unknown which tombstone toppled over, but a grave marker nearly 4 feet tall and weighing about 200 pounds and close to a tree at the back of the cemetery has its top cracked off.

The headstone, which is upright and has no debris next to it, has four sides with text and dates to the 1850s.

"Everyone's just making sure the girl is OK," said Jamie Hosford the district's assistant superintendent.

LOL!

That poor child! I hope the ground was soft! I also hope that they don't discontinue the activity for the kids due to this one accident. Maybe the teacher should have been more selective in which tombstones she/he picked out for safety factors, but it all was still an accident.

While I have spent my fair share of time enjoying the peace, beauty, and tranqulity of cemeteries, I never got into the whole tombstone charcoaling thing. The people I knew that used to do it did it strictly for the "goth" factor, and nothing more. They never framed them, made them into art, reserched the person dead, or preserved them at all. tsk tsk tsk I've seen some really beautiful etchings, but its just never been my thing. Hmmmmmmm, Tszura is getting an idea though......maybe going to Indiana to etch James Deans tombstone..... Road Trip!!!
