While in the D.... Having worked for hotels for quite some time I mastered stuff to do in the area.

Holocaust Museum

Ford Fairlane Property (owned and cared for by U of M Dearborn) - free to walk the grounds, building tours are nominal

Eastern Market - Detroit's oldest open air market (Saturday mornings for the full effect) there are also antique shops and if you're lucky the honey vendor is in and you get free samples. Oh, dude the cheese selection!

Check Real Detroit and Metro Times for events downtown... I don't have a copy laying around now, but I'm sure someone can reference what's going on downtown.

Royal Oak - shopping, dining and drinking all in one convenient location. (you're likely to run into a DGNer or 2)

The clubs- City Club, Necto, Mephisto's or the myriad of jazz bars, hip-hop, top 40, etc.

Detroit Zoo - Hey it's fun!

You can also- take in a tiger's game at the new stadium (it's cheap and fun), Hang out at Campus Martius park, there's a myriad of little shops hidden downtown (it's perfectly safe to walk around downtown- just stay out of residential areas) *note not all residential areas in the D are bad, but how the hell is someone not from the area going to know the difference (i grew up in southwest, I like being in the D), Check out MI's website and find some metroparks- if you want to play in a lake

Food

Greektown

Mexicantown

Pria's (Indian)

Meh, it's a starter list.... There's tons of shyt to do here.

Oh, you have to check out Greenfield Village- they have Edison's lab!!! Great way to learn about our country's history. Completely interactive, mostly.

Henry Ford Museum and now Ford Rouge Factory Tours.... I no into cars... go on website.

well during the day, we have some days with more time that others. We like the outdoors, we like to see new things ( since I have not been to detroit I would be up to see just about anything) Restaurants or eaterys that are one of a kind or noteworthy. ( I am a cook at home, ** aka a Foodie**) Though if there is somewhere or something that you would say,you need to eat or see this if you are coming up here. THen I would like to check it out. Im really up for just about anything.

ahh.. a foodie my specialty.. I've had the fortune to eat at some really interesting and good places..

One noteworthy place (not fast but really good, featured on Food TV) The Fly Trap in Ferndale.. Great place to hang out (right next to the Magic Bag), excellent food.

There's the Blue Nile, also in Ferndale great eating experience..

Ethiopian Restaurant-Ferndale

545 W. Nine Mile Road

Ferndale, Michigan 48220

If you want more stars to your dining pleasure..these next few are **** (You can only get five stars if you're open 24).. anyway.. there's

The Lark is in W. Bloomfield, excellent food..

Tribute (featured on food TV) on 12 mile & Orchard Lake also great food

Shiro (Japanese/French Infusion) Fucking fantastic,.. it's hidden away in Novi.

I would say the Whitney (but my uncle no longer owns it, and hear it's gone downhill since) but it's a gorgeous building, so even if the food isn't great the ambiance is fantastic. (My uncle has been on several TV interviews where they say the building is haunted) I think my other uncle may still give tours.. he's a great tour guide.

If you like Korean food, or would like to sample it, I've eaten at SEVERAL the best one in this area (IMO) is on 9 mile road & Beech which is in Southfield. Mom/Pop type establishment, but the food is really good. If you want more commercialized but also excellent is New Seoul Garden in on 11 mile road (service type drive) off Telegraph.

If you like Persian food an excellent place is Pars in Farmington Hills (I think 13 Mile & Orchard Lake Road)

If you like Creole (Haven't been in a while, but was good when I went there)

Fishbones which has two locations one in detroit (monroe street, I believe near greektown) and one in W. Bloomfield/Southfield off Northwestern Hwy.

Ann Arbor is home of the Gandy Dancer (which has a fucking awesome Sunday Buffet, then shopping/hanging downtown a2 is excellent).

Middle Eastern food, I would used to have said La Shish.. but they're no longer in operation, but his brother owns La Pita Cafe, which is equally as good. Also Mezza (they're a chain too)

If you like Italian (My favorite place is this little place near me) called Antonio's Cuchina 12 Mile Road & Halstead

Andiamo's is also supposed to be good, I personally don't like the food, but the desserts are excellent. There are TONS of good Italian places..

If you like good pizza, Buddy's is great they have several locations..

Small Plates in Detroit & Royal Oak is a unique eating experience.

Just about anywhere except (Last time I went there, it sucked Memphis Smoke & Mr. B's) In Royal Oak, you can't go wrong..

There's a fantastic Sub Shop in Royal Oak on 2nd Street .. definitely exciting

Anywhere in Greektown (I've yet to have a bad meal anywhere there) If you like sweets the Astoria (in Detroit & in Royal Oak)

Umm.. have I exhausted you yet?

Sorry, Don't know what type of food you are interested in, so I thought I'd list a few. :)

These are only the places I've tried, there are TONS that I haven't tried, but these are to name a few. :)

Happy eating!!!

I was trying to name off non-chain restaurants.

Welcome.. I didn't notice if you rounded down a city that you'd be near, but I figured broad sweeping generalizations would be good.. that way you can take your pick :)

I hear ya, but there have to be things to do other than the clubs at night. we may just have to plan this one by ear.

Most people who dont live in the city come here to work or party and for those who live in the city go downtown to party.
