The Question for members of DGN....

DO YOU FEEL THAT IN YOUR LIFETIMES THE "RIGHT" (Republicans, conservatives, etc...) HAVE GIVEN, OR TAKEN AWAY MORE RIGHTS THEN THE "LEFT" (Democrats, Liberals, etc...)?

or do you think the question is not relevent because both sides of this paticular coin have done about the same positivly or negativly as far as peoples "rights" are concerned?

I believe that the great anti-authoritarian vibe this country was founded on has died a grisly death with the surrender of Lee to Grant at the Appomattox Court House. People are now just blind sheep of the government, the only people with the balls to stand up to it are the peaceniks, so true armed rebellion of any tyranny is out the window.

Traditionally, the Republican ideology was, "The government should only do for the people what they cannot do for themselves." This I agree with. Unfortunately the right has strayed from this path and gone who knows where.

The Democrats, to me, have always seemed to be, "We will do for the people everything because we don't trust them to do it themselves." If you're one of those people who can't do, then the left seems like a great place to be. I can do though and just want the government out of my way so I can do it.

A recent study has shown the conservatives tend to be happier than liberals and part of the reasoning is the left tends to rely on others to take care of them and that will always lead to disappointment and depression whereas the right tries to take care of themselves so if they fail, they only have themselves to blame but when they succeed, they enjoy the glory.

Lately though, if I had to join a party, I'd go either Libertarian or Constitution. "As long as you are not infringing on the liberties of others, then have at it."

I can give you an example of Democrats taking away a right with one compound word.

Super-Delegate.

“Harvey Milk School”—the nation’s first publicly run high school for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students. "Everybody feels that it's a good idea because some of the kids who are gays and lesbians have been constantly harassed and beaten in other schools and this lets them get an education without having to worry," Mayor Michael Bloomberg

So, Democrats support School segragation...

school segregation for safety is a far cry from segregation due to racial superiority.

Frankly the national personality (for lack of a better phrase) that has resulted from the right-left tension-vector bores me to tears.

They don't even allow Non-Gay teachers or administrators, because a straight person would never be able to relate to a gay child. O_o

So my close relationship with my gay niece is totally fake. OK.

and what about the schools where it's policy that a white teacher can not teach Black History?

but to broaden my stance...

It's the Left pushing to reinstate the Draft.

It's the Left pushing to take away Property Rights.

It's the Left pushing to limit Free Speech with the "Fairness Doctrine".

It's the Left pushing to steal privately owned industries and make them Public Property (Oil companys).

From what I can see...

The "Right" has tried to take away the freedoms of homosexuals to be within society (marriage, taxes, teachers, etc...)

The "Right" has taken away a lot of the freedoms of privacy that americans have (Patriot act, wiretapping, etc...)

The "Right" has taken away a lot of the rights and benifits of American soldiers (Poor health care, longer tours of duty, the draft, etc...)

The "Right" has tried to impose it's agenda in the learning environment and take away the freedom of learning (Creationism, Intelligent design, etc...)

The "Right" Has done a lot of damage to the U.S. economy (Big business tax breaks, outsourcing, Oil Companies, etc...)

The "Right" Has ignored a lot of pollution and environmental issues (Global warming, Ozone Layer, Endagered Species, etc...)

The "Right" has damaged a lot of free speach issues (Cencorship)

The "Left" has tried to remove fairness of the higher education (Segregation, Affirmative Action)

The "Left" has sold a lot of the U.S. intrests into the hands of China.

The "Left" Has created a lot of budget problems as far as taxes and the economy.

Homosexuals are do not have that Right to be taken away. It can be argued that they should, but they have neer ahd it, so nobody took anything away from them.

Could you please enumerate what rights you have lost because of the Patriot Act? Wire tapping of Non-US Citizens is not taking away any of your Rights.

When you sign up for the Military, you sign a contract... to 8 years service. 3-6 active and the rest in the IRR. You are aware in the IRR that you can be called back to active at anytime. If you don't know that, you should not have signed the contract. People tell you to read things before you sign them for a reason. You are also verballly made aware of this fact... if you did not pay attention, your fault.

There is no Draft. As much as people have screamed that the "Right" is trying to bring it back. It's Democrats and Liberals drafting the Bills in Congress to re-enact the draft. It's Liberal pundints I hear blabbering that it should be brought back.

Yes, those God awfull Corperations and Oil companys... that horrible recession we are in.. wait... no... there has not been even one quater of economic loss... Big business tax breaks.. evil things... that keep factories open and planes flying... and lets not forget that every time tax rates are lowered, we gets gains in tax revenue.

How is fighting to have something taught, not as a replacement, by as an alternative... taking away the freedom to learn?

The "Right" gave you the EPA and almost all the the core enviromental laws. Endangered Speciecs list? The Right gave you that.

The "Right" is fighting against the Fairness Doctrine. Could you pint me at something that has been censord? Any hint at all to what the Right is hiding from us?

I don't disagree with the next two at all.

This last one... The Left and Right can take the blame for taxes and the economy. The two partys have way to much power.

I agree with bringing the draft back.

I agree there....

The Patroit act has taken away a lot of peoples privacy rights,

"The trouble with the bill is that it's very sweeping and it can apply not just to suspected terrorists but people and organizations that may be engaged in lawful actions,"
- Jerry Berman, executive director for the Center for Democracy and Technology (CDT).

EPIC FOIA Documents Show Possible Patriot Act Abuses. Documents (pdf, 3.1 mb) obtained by EPIC under the Freedom of Information Act describe thirteen cases of possible FBI misconduct in intelligence investigations. The documents were released by the Bureau in response to an EPIC open government request (pdf) for information about the FBI's use of provisions of the PATRIOT Act. EPIC has written a letter (pdf) to the Senate Judiciary Committee highlighting the need for the Attorney General to report to Congress on potentially unlawful intelligence investigations. For more information, see EPIC's PATRIOT FOIA Litigation page. (Oct. 24, 2005)

Punishes speech protected by the First Amendment, even of lawful permanent residents. The USA PATRIOT Act permits visitors and immigrants to be found "inadmissible" for advocacy that the Secretary of State determines undermines our anti-terrorism efforts. This could conceivably include speeches, Letters to the Editor, or other comments about the government and its actions.
- ACLU

Allows non-citizens to be detained without charge and held indefinitely once charged.

This is permissible if the U.S. government certifies that there are "reasonable grounds" to believe a person's action threatens national security. This runs counter to U.S. and international rights to due process and could also lead to violations of rights in the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, which guarantee that governments be notified if their nationals are detained.

Amnesty International

Infringes on the right to privacy and removes many types of judicial review over intelligence activities.

The USA PATRIOT Act permits the government to scrutinize peoples' reading habits by monitoring public library and bookstore records, without notifying the suspect. It also allows for "sneak and peak" tactics such as physical search of property and computers, wiretapping and monitoring of email, and access to financial and educational records, without providing notification. These activities contradict the right to be free from arbitrary interference with individuals' privacy, as protected in the U.S. Constitution and the ICCPR.

Amnesty International

To name a few ways.... The patriot act has damaged peoples rights and rights to privacy....

Wiretapping, if I want to talk to a non U.S. citizen (like several of my past GF have been) and not have my conversation recorded... I should be able to.... The patriot act infringes on that right.
