Florida teen loses arm in alligator attack

(06-24) 11:35 PDT Okeechobee, Fla. (AP) --

A Florida teen who was attacked by an 11 1/2-foot alligator lost his arm, but managed to escape with his life after poking the animal in the eye.

A sheriff's office report says Kasey Edwards was hanging out with friends beside a canal in Okeechobee (oh-kee-CHOH'-bee) County on Sunday when he decided to go swimming.

Halfway through the swim, an alligator clamped down on his left arm. Edwards says he fought back by grabbing onto a buoy line and not letting go. He then poked the animal in the eye to get free.

As Edwards began to swim away, he noticed that his left arm was missing. Friends pulled him to safety and he was taken to a hospital for treatment.

They recovered the arm from the gator's belly, but couldn't reattach it.

Poor guy.

I hated living in Florida when my kids were small - so many snakes, bugs and dangerous animals. We lived in the country and had to call the gator farm to come get gators regularly that came into our yard. They would actually stalk my kids, couldn't let them play outside in the yard without me out there and we never ever would swim in any of the lakes. The problem is even worse because some people are stupid enough to feed them, making them associate people with food.

The version of the story I read said that these guys KNEW there were alligators in the canal and the others told this halfwit not to go in the water. As I recall, there was alcohol involved also.

HAHAHA- I just re-read that last part. "...he noticed his left arm was missing". I can just see it now: "Damn, why do I keep swimming in circles? Wait- WTF?! Where'd my arm go? I swear it was just here!"

Well, uh, there is one good thing that will come out of this I suppose.

That teen will now be known at school as the the badass who beat back an alligator.
