Most judges who have considered such requests have insisted that federal agents obtain a probable cause warrant to track suspects, as they would be required to do if they wished to wiretap the suspect's conversation. But in 2005, a federal judge in New York ruled that cells could be tracked under a far looser evidentiary standard.

The ACLU and EFF are hoping that the release of internal memoranda and policies will shed some light on the prevalence of such requests, and the level of judicial scrutiny to which they are subject. Thus far, they have been ignored or rebuffed by the offices to which they have sent requests.

No alarm bells are going off for me just yet, at least not due to any real information I have about this. (This article being the only real "research" i ever did on the subject, thanks Mr. Beau for the post)

Groups like the ACLU and EFF get a lot of flack from a lot of corners, but I'm glad at least some groups are motivated to check into this sort of stuff, even if i don't always agree with them. Rather than just do what I do, and I'd guess most of us do, which is armchair quarterback the subjects.

The police can "track and monitor" me on radar and parabolic type devices if they have probable cause without a warrant, not sure how much of a distinction I'd draw. Another perception of safety vs freedom balancing act is where I think my thoughts tend on this one.

Does the government have a right to know my geographic location without my direct consent or a judges consent? (Thinking more philosophically than legally here) *ponders*

Duh Of Course They Are

This is the one time that black people are right and not over paranoid of the police.

The police are keeping track of everyone via cell phone because it easy. We want all this high tech crap on our phone that has GPS and internet and recording devices. We make it easier for them to track us. I know we want all this shit on our phone but its how the police keeps track of everyone even your conversation. Well except on minute phones, no contract, no name no good. Just think about it if they can put these little implants in your dog and track you can do this with people. So yeah cell phone tracking of course.

Are there enough staff to monitor everyday people for no particular reason? I doubt it.

You dont get watched untill you say keywords over the phone on a registry unless they are looking at you for another reason. computers monitor every call made and they alert someone to tune in when you say a phrase or word such as "lets start a revolution and attack a federal building" or "Bomb"... kinda like kaptcha but with audio detection instead of random letters as a keycode for an alert.. and the numbers of people who monitor phone calls is "undeclared"...

and people wonder why the fbi is hiring more agents now than ever before

as for me personally caring if big brothers breathing down my back...

i dont, in fact if they wernt before they are probably going to at least glance at this post to make sure i wasnt threatining anybody with one of the phrases above
