cptdeath Posted August 15, 2008 Posted August 15, 2008 so i heard nasa has developed a new plasma rocket. seems oddly familiar in design to the tesla particle weapon design of the late 1930's. uses electrical energy to convert hydrogen or other possable fuels to plasma, heat it in an elctromagnetic field and expell it through an open ended focused vacum (space) as a propultion system. tesla's original concept was to create the vacume here and focus accelerated particles through it at the open end to transfer large amounts of energy through the air wirelessly or to repel invading air craft from a countries borders ( it was a practical concept in 1934). problem was it required a large amount of electricity a few seperate power plants. now the vacume provided by the natural enviroment of outer space and the ability to generate the vast amounts of electricity through nuclear generators makes the concept more practical then ever. it was never concieved as a propulsion system, but you never know with tesla. i'm sure you guy's can find the appropriate links for me. tesla death ray, NASA vasimr engine. variable something something magnetoplasma rocket. makes you kinda wonder why they even took this long to build it in the first place. the future of solar technology looks good to. they say in ten years a solar panel will be able to generate alot more power then we think. making a space craft that is versatile and mass producable is a an easy thing to consider. solar and nuclear with thre possable fuels types. and multiple propulsion system. save the hydrogen for radiation sheilding because you can switch over to chemical engine as a back up. deploy large solar wings at times to pick up free energy when you don't need to use your unrenewable resources. and instead of making on experimental ships one after another start an assembly line to produce fleets of theese ships with interchangeable parts. retro fit some of this stuff on pre existing ships. design the solar wings so all you have to do is slip a pannel out and replace it with the newest latest one as they develope. still in the same housing so it can fit in preveous production lines. why do this? like the boy scouts be prepared for the future. a whole new crap load of issues we can't even concieve if we do this. questions like sovergnty of law by a nation in international space. space pirates, monetary systems? profit motivated or madness motivated. will the monetary system break down the father you get away from civilization. regulations of space travel, anybody with the money could hire a crew and go to do whatever. for whatever reason. once this goes on. itt'l just be on. no going back. people will need new problems solved. new weapons new systems of thinking, sensors, solutions to unimagined threats. nothing ventured nothing gained. the next new world. will we have to regulate how much raw materials go off world never to return.
Gaf The Horse With Tears Posted August 15, 2008 Posted August 15, 2008 I don't see any simularity between the two devices. Other than they both use electricity.
Head Wreck Posted August 15, 2008 Posted August 15, 2008 Nikolai Tesla really did turn into a crackpot in the end
