Gaf The Horse With Tears Posted August 17, 2008 Posted August 17, 2008 Well, we are not going to get get off easy again this year.
Raev Posted August 17, 2008 Posted August 17, 2008 I'm so jealous. I'll be there next week, was hoping that if one was going to hit - it would happen while I was there. Sure, I'd prefer FL not get hit this year...but hey...being in one is part of my list of things to do before I die
Msterbeau Posted August 17, 2008 Posted August 17, 2008 You mean it's coming right at YOU. We'll see a couple drops of rain. Maybe.
creatureofthenyte Posted August 17, 2008 Posted August 17, 2008 Well stay safe! I'm hearing that people are being forced to evacuate. Hopefully you have full insurance.

One made landfall near Ft. Jacksn when I was in basic training. We were doing our 8 mile march at the end of training. The trucks could not get to us.. if we stopped moving we started to blow away. We tied our belts together, put the smallest guys in the middle of groups of larger men, grabed the man in front of us and walked into the wind, slowly, for about 8-10 hours. It was... We looked Mother Nature in the eye in all her Fury.

Goth Brooks Posted August 17, 2008 Posted August 17, 2008 tropical storms are weak. go shower in one, makes you feel like a man. HAHA I just noticed the "I am here" dot. Nice.
Reaper Posted August 17, 2008 Posted August 17, 2008 Wow, my old man is right in its path, just north of Tampa. He is always saying how hurricanes never come his way and that it always ends up being just some rain and a little wind. Might get it this time.
Hellion Posted August 17, 2008 Posted August 17, 2008 I have yet to experience something like this, some of you might have seen this old footage before http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFxvmbbgg8M
Gaf The Horse With Tears Posted August 18, 2008 Author Posted August 18, 2008 Whats your point? Cat 1 is still 70mph sustained winds.. and it look like I will be in the worst part of it.. the "down" side... lovely.
Goth Brooks Posted August 18, 2008 Posted August 18, 2008 It didn't even get to tropical storm status until it was between Puerto Rico and Hispanola. If it actually strengthens to a Cat1 after passing Cuba, I'll be seriously surprised. It's been years since I've been in some lovely hurricane season weather, I miss it :(
taysteewonderbunny Posted August 18, 2008 Posted August 18, 2008 Um, enjoy it as best as you can and stay safe. Please be good neighbor and helps some people. I hope you and yours weather well.

It's been years since I've been in some lovely hurricane season weather, I miss it :( The water between Cuba and Florida is some of the warmest in the world. What that translates to is a huge battery of stored power the storm is going to soak up. Strengthening to a Cat1 or evenly remotely a Cat2 is exactly what the National Weather Service and the Hurricane Center are expecting it to do by 8am Tuesday morning. Perhaps you know something about weather systems that they don't?
Goth Brooks Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 The water between Cuba and Florida is some of the warmest in the world. Strengthening to a Cat1 or evenly remotely a Cat2 is exactly what the National Weather Service and the Hurricane Center are expecting it to do by 8am Tuesday morning. Perhaps you know something about weather systems that they don't? Nothing to do with knowledge or experience, but opinion and perception. Tropical storms and hurricanes maintain and build their strength by staying over open water. This one started right on Hispanola's doorstep, and ran along the coast of Cuba before swinging up through it. Kept it from building up. It was simply an opinion that: Due to it's starting point, it's (then) current wind speed and movement speed, and it's plotted path that it wouldn't hit hurricane strength. I was barely right.
DarkChylde Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 I've experienced a hurricane before as well, but I was only a kid at the time. fars my memory goes the whole sky was spinning and it looked like there was a huge eye in the middle. Vehicles flying through the air along with garbage cans and dumpsters. I saw all that for a split second and next thing I know my dad just swooped me off the ground and took me inside a building where it was safe. I wish I could remember it liked it was yesterday because it was a awesome scenery.
