I'm a huge fan of video game soundtracks, especially those from classic RPGs and Squaresoft games.

I'm such a nerd that I used to collect sheet music to video game music when I was a teenager.

In fact, I'm such a nerd that I'm listening to the Chrono Trigger soundtrack as I type this.

So..... are there any other fans of video game soundtracks out there? If so, what are your favorites?

Yeah Akira Yamaoko's soundtracks for the silent hill games are my favorites. I also love the soundtracks to the castlevania games.

Oooh yes, those are some good soundtracks.

I especially love the soundtrack to Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Yes, I still listen to that on a regular basis.

Of the final Fantasy games, the only one that I wasn't head-over-heels for was FF8. Some of the music on that game sounded like elevator music. Don't get me wrong, that game did produce some classics, such as "Liberi Fatali;" it just didn't compare to some of the other FF soundtracks.

Here's a good place to download some MIDI files from video games:

If you want a damn good soundtrack without words, get the game Descent II which was made in Ann Arbor actually. It includes alot of tracks from Ogre and a track from Type O Negatives "Haunted" off the October Rust album. Also on the album are songs by Brian Luzietti, Ron Valdez, Mark Morgan and Mark Walk.

I LOVE my Chrono Cross CD. Several of the songs on there make me feel really sad.

I borrow my brother's FF7 and Chrono Trigger soundtracks quite frequently as well.

I also REALLY REALLY like Robotnik's boss theme from Sonic 2. A couple times when I got really pissed off at people the song actually started playing in my head, lol.

Tales of Symphonia is alright.

king of fighters soundtracks were some of my favorites (namely kof96)

bust a move 1 and 2 were also good, zone of enders title track was pretty good as well. Rule of Rose had a classy sound to it.

ahh, and don't get me started on Guilty Gear...

I could name a lot more, but I probably got soundtracks from games you've never heard of.

I always tended to like the two songs on Bejeweled as well.

It is only fitting that the best video game soundtrack ever come from the best video game ever, that is to say Chrono Trigger. In fact, I'm not sure if you know about it, but there is a site, OCRemix, which features remixes of classic video game tunes. They have created an entire symphonic arrangement of the Chrono Trigger soundtrack, intended as the soundtrack to a Chrono Trigger movie.

Much of the Final 8 soundtrack was somewhat uninspired, but the theme, Faye Wong's "Eyes on Me" makes up for it.

I just listened to some of the music on the original Mega Man X soundtrack. I forgot how awesome that entire soundtrack is. I'm glad to know that I'[m not the only "nerd" who can sit here and wntertain myself with video game soundtracks.

There's an awesome website where you can download original mp3's of video game music, not remixes, but it doesn't seem to be working today. I hope it wasn't shut down...

An important memo for the Final Fantasy fans out there:

Mark your calendars for April 14, 2009, at 7:30 pm. At this time, there will be a Final Fantasy concert at DeVos Performance Hall in Grand Rapids. According to the webmaster of http://www.vgmusic.com (who is a fellow Michigander), Nobuo Uematsu, Final Fantasy's musical composer, will be at the concert in Grand Rapids. If some of us DGNers could plan to go to this together, that would be awesome. I've been to several classical concerts in the past, but never one that featured video game music. I've been wanting to go to this event every time they held it, but never could.

Here are some links for more information on this concert:

http://www.grsymphony.org/events/concerts/...distant-worlds/

Experience the thrill of the Final Fantasy video game series' most memorable sequences. State-of-the-art videos and images will be projected on screens above the orchestra, while the award-winning series game soundtrack, composed by the "John Williams" of gaming music, Nobuo Uematsu, is performed live.

Tickets are also on sale now for another newly scheduled performance - Distant Worlds: music from FINAL FANTASY will make its Michigan premiere in Grand Rapids on April 14, 2009 at the DeVos Performance Hall, performed by the Grand Rapids Symphony and Chorus. And Uematsu-san himself will be joining us live in Grand Rapids for the performance and participating in a special VIP reception for a limited number of our audience after the concert.

SSX 3 soundtrack is a really good one...and has some of my favorite songs on it...including "Mas" by Kinky

American MaGee's Alice was always a favorite soundtrack of mine. Nice, creepy, and has some of the best quotes from the game.

"The Darkness" has a soundtrack that was compiled by Mike Patton, former lead singer for Faith no More, and features "Captain Midnight", a song from one of Mike's current bands, Tomahawk.

Imo, the company that's always consistantly put out games with badass soundtracks has been Rareware. For instance, Killer Instinct has a badass soundtrack. When I got it for Christmas I think in 5th grade it actually came with the soundtrack on CD and I still have it, every so often I pop it in and jam . All the DKC games had very good soundtracks, especially the first one.

Earthbound, being my ultimately favorite game of all time in existance, makes me happy whenever I hear any of the music 'cause I'm big into nostalgia.

Ha... Not exactly a game soundtrack, but it sounded like it. I took a tour of one of our plants here yesterday. They have robots that cruise slowly along set paths carrying parts and materials to various points. One that went by us was playing this very old school video game sounding version of the Star Wars theme. It was hardly recognizable..
