Hurricane Ike

I don't watch a lot of T.V. but this is preposterous gas going way over the five dollar line and a company plus town demise. This has to be a dream someone pitch me. If any of you knew about this early I hope you have a full tank of gas already.

Supply and Demand.

22% of the USA's Domestic Fuel production shut down do to the storm.

I still like to know why they purposely built all the refineries in those areas.when they knew that the area is prone to hurricanes.

just like the one nuclear power plant in California that is located near a major fault line.

I honest to god hope one of these fucking hurricanes goes through a certain town in alabama and destroy someone's life right now...

They are close to the Oil fields in the Gulf and the Oil fields Texas and Mexico. Bulding them anywhere else would require large pipelines to transport the oil and fuel. That would drive the cost to produce and deliver product way up. That would lead to higher prices at the pumps.

Yes, while it is true that the large capital investment will increase the price of refining, at this point it is becoming an either / or proposition. If the projections are to be believed, and there really is no credible research out there to contradict the current consensus, we are to expect more hurricanes, more often.

Simply put, we will need to either move the refineries inland, and pay the price, or shut down the refineries several times a year during hurricane season, and pay the price.

I don't care if you don't believe in man made global warming. Global warming is fucking happening, and the mechanism thereof is really irrelevant. As such, the solution is simple.

America must engage in an Apollo program for energy policy. The goal is to be off oil in ten years, and the prize is domestic energy security.

It's not impossible, and even if it takes twenty years to accomplish, we should start now.

Though I agree with most of what you said... I have to take issue with this statement.

If the projections are to be believed, and there really is no credible research out there to contradict the current consensus, we are to expect more hurricanes, more often.

It's completely untrue.

Ok, Gaf... the downside of your argument... which boils down to "DO ABSOLUTELY FUCKING NOTHING, I'M NOT LISTENING I'M STICKING MY FINGERS IN MY EARS LALALALALALA!!!" is that if you are wrong, the refineries are still vulnerable, and the cost at the pump keeps going up.

My downside, removing ourselves from a finite resource stream, is that we did it now instead of fifty years from now.

Which has less risk, and makes more sense?

Excuse me? I said I agreed with you. My only point was that you said that Global Warming, no matter the cause, was going to cause more hurricanes. You also stated that no credible scientific studies have shown that that statement was not true. On those point you are wrong.

It's something I have been pointing out for some times... pretty much since the global warming debates started. Global warming will cause fewer hurricanes or at least weaken them and there is a great deal of scientific evidence to support that claim.

As to the finite nature of hydro-carbon fuels... I have two words for you that most likely will buy the human race much time when it comes to a fuel source. Gas Hydrate.
