Az_ Posted September 14, 2008 Posted September 14, 2008 So what is God? How do you know he exists? How do you know she exists? How do you know anything about God? Is God just a convenient label for your attempt to understand the ways of the universe? Nature? Do you commune with this God? Is it in words? Is it in thoughts? Is it in some way that is definitively exterior to your brain? Or could it be your brain simply representing God for you? Do you feel the need to share your notion of God with others? Or is God a personal thing that should not be shared? What can God do? What can God not do? Does God do anything? Do you think there is a way to detect the presence of God in the universe that would convince us skeptics? Do you think God cares about convincing people of his existence? Does God care about anything? Open table discussion. What the heck is God? Go ahead and throw your ideas and thoughts on the subject out there. Whats the point of communicating if no one talks about important subjects? Ideas only grow when exposed to the light of day. Expose your ideas to the light of day... er ok... the darkness of DGN. Heck... just expose them. Lets see if this goes anywhere.
Hellion Posted September 14, 2008 Posted September 14, 2008 I am agnostic,I believe there is some form of power(higher form) out there but have yet to discover it. I really do not believe in the christian faith at all,and never will.IMO if there really was a god,we would not have the bullshit in this world that we have now.but thats just how I feel.and of course we have the Big Bang Theory as well too.
phee Posted September 14, 2008 Posted September 14, 2008 (doesn't mean I won't talk about it of course)
Homicidalheathen Posted September 14, 2008 Posted September 14, 2008 ..........god is in my pantz......... for i worship at theh altar of grand crotch poomba
Gaf The Horse With Tears Posted September 14, 2008 Posted September 14, 2008 Well, I don't know. I know God is not what most people envision God to be. I think, you are going to get more statements of what people want God to be. The ideal that they have, but not what God is. I don't think that God is something that we have words for. I believe God is beyond true human comprehension. Think of it this way... Science tells us their are 6 dimensions. We can "see" three of them and are aware of the 4th. The 5th and 6th dimensions are beyond us. We can't even conceptualize what they are. We can barely grasp and have little understanding of the 4th. How could we possible describe, let alone understand, an entity that exists and is aware of all 6 dimensions?

Unless you go for string theory... in which there are at least 12 dimensions.... which I think proves your point even more

Heh, it's weird, but I actually have the philosophy that the reason everything is fucked up on Earth is because there's a God. To me Earth is a test, tests are hard to pass, so obviously that explains all of the strife. Our entire existance on this planet is not only an illusion but not even important what-so-ever, imo, it's basically just a small little trial run. God knows that yes, there's a lot of suffering on the planet, but like a parent forcing their kid to do something they don't want to God knows that it will better us to go through this, no matter how painful, and that once we die we will go back to where ever we came from and all will be well. Just imo, may sound kinda stupid...
SaGa Posted September 14, 2008 Posted September 14, 2008 God *ponders for 5 hours* nope i got nothing. talk to someone Really fucking high on drugs. he will tell you about this god fellow
Troy Spiral (13) Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 Its such a loosely used word that you basically have to define the term every time you use it. The word-games ensue rapidly if not. Even then the word-games are difficult to avoid but at least there is a chance. Hah. When I use the term "God" I'm referring to a personal god. A supernatural entity that created the universe and is looking after his creation in one way or another. This god actually has a personality, not the atheistic "god is the universe" ala Einstien or some such confusion of terms. If I meant the universe, I'd just say "the universe". Usually, I'm talking specifically about the god of Islam/Christianity/Judaism but might be using it a bit more loosely. If I do use the term God to describe a pantheon of gods or other spirit type entities, I tend to make sure its clear I'm talking about a more vague or inclusive term to include any/all possible deities. I've spent a large part of my free time over the years studying all sorts of religious ideas and ideologies from pagan to the very mainstream. I continue to do so fairly regularly. The subject is one of my main interests. (Other than Cambodians and Pan-fries that is.) Despite believing in "It" the large majority of my life (almost totally based on tradition and "common sense" with no actual objective study) My current thinking (as of say the last 2-4 years) is that there is no evidence strong enough to justify a belief in such an entity. It is (and has been) invoked to explain the currently unexplainable by creatures (mankind) that likes to have answers and will take leaps of (unjustified) faith to not have to deal with uncertainty, so scared of uncertainty in fact, that we will even cling to anything that grants us certainty, even in the face of very, very little good evidence. I've always said I want to believe in such a caretaker/creator even if he/she/it didn't exist as it makes things more clear/simple. I think I still feel that way, but my passion to get closer to the truth has slowly eroded my desire to be certain. If there is a god and that is "the truth" I'd be good with it, I'm just currently very, very doubtful.

How could we possible describe, let alone understand, an entity that exists and is aware of all 6 dimensions? As was pointed out string theory does theorize that there may be 11 or 12 dimensions in total. But the issue isn't whether we can imagine such things. It is whether we can form ways of detecting such things. Our imagination is the product of our time which is pretty much wired for dealing with three spacial dimensions and linear time. So thinking outside that box can be difficult for some. There are ways to do it. But its still a difficult task. But fortunately our brains are well suited for imagining entire worlds within its small confines. So even if God is beyond our comprehension should not his actions be detectable? Should not there be evidence of his actions? Do you think there is evidence of his actions to be found? Perhaps we skeptics are just not acknowledging the evidence? Or do you favor a deistic god. The mechanic that made the universe and then walked away?
vampire Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 all that i know is that God doesn't like speaking with the white-house over the phone ... cause it's way less demanding to comunicate using hand jestures when talking to .. you know who in the oval office

SaGa Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 kabbala tells me this is god. hes getting more and more complex. 100 years from now someone will make a super computer that will describe god for us. and will take our lifetimes to understand what the super computer described to us
TitsMcGee Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 To me God has a very sick sense of humor. He/She/It could be there but I don't know so I don't really dwell on it to much. Although if there is I'm not happy with them about a few things.
Jessika Fxckin rocks (1) Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 I found a pic of him LOL Yet again thats funny
