We're a much more mobile society than most. It's easier to move hundreds (if not thousands) of miles away to start a new life....and take others among the unsuspecting.

I think youre right. Also, we have a more advanced law enforcement organisation, and an obsession with psychology. For all anyone knows, there could have been legions of serial killers in third world countries that have never been found out.
