I respect those scientists who dared to defy traditional religious beliefs, such as Charles Darwin.

I am also a fan of Bill Nye the Science Guy.

I also like Rick Astley's lab coat. j/k

And Mr. Wizard!!!

...thought I would say..

..those statements show your age..(it made me giggle)

Those who are fans of Watson and Crick...you might also be interested in reading about Rosalind Franklin, who did not get the Nobel (but certainly deserved it)

Please note my list Franklin=Rosalind Franklin.

Also, watch "Quest for the Double Helix" if one can find it.

"Real" scientists? Aka not guys I just think that are interesting that are science "minded" (Lot of "new age" thinkers get listed as scientists but are not, strictly speaking actually scientists. Also some religion and atheistic commentators sometimes play at science, and I like their books but they too are not "really" scientists, in a professional sense. )

If we define "favorite" as "guys I like reading (their actual books) or like seeing in documentaries:

In Order:

1. Carl Sagan - The Documentary Cosmos and the book The Demon Haunted World (his final book before he died) should be required reading.

2. Richard Dawkins - His lecture at Randolph Macon Women's College should be listed as the same. The horrific out-of-context use of his public seeking in a recent movie should have a label on it "warning: bullshit incoming".

3. Micheal Shermer - His book: Why (Smart) People believe Weird Things , while a slightly hard read if your not used to non fiction should be also required reading. (Note: I like him more for all the things he has done for science than his writing.

4. Brain Greene / Neil Tyson - Brain Greene = Documentary: The Elegant Universe, Book: The Fabric Of The Cosmos (better than the book version of The Elegant Universe) Tyson: TV Series: Nova Science Now, Book/Documentary: Nova: Origins (Probably before anything else on this list these would be where i would start)

5. Lawrence Krauss - His book The Physics Of Stark Trek is just too cool. Hehe.

The lecture series' "Beyond Belief and Beyond Belief 2.0" which include many of the above along with dozens of others should also be required reading once you feel reasonably educated on scientific stuff.

Honorable Mentions: Patricia Churchland, Stephen Hawking.

(Long) Dead Scientists:

To many to lists. DaVinci, Newton, Bhor (and friends) , Einstien for sure.

I figured :) I just didn't know if everyone else knew the connection. I also like that you added fictional scientists. Who doesn't love some Star Trek, eh?

GUy has this DVD about her, DNA: Secret of Photo 51 from Nova. I think he's going to be showing it to one of his classes.

whikker?

Ishould mention if were going fictional it would be prudent to list influences from fiction on medern science, like how heat vision, cloaking, and laser sights for hand guns all came from the movie Predator ( yes they had heat vision in ww2 but most research started heavily cause of the Predator)
