n0Mad Posted October 9, 2008 Posted October 9, 2008 A few weeks ago my dad and I spent a day canoeing the Peshtigo River, but it was a mid portion further north than the city. Several years ago dad and I drove through Peshtigo and stopped to read a few signs. He grew up in Marinette so he was quite familiar with the fire and educated me on it. The Chicago fire gets all the press though.
Hellion Posted October 9, 2008 Posted October 9, 2008 Also the Texas City disaster of 1947 was one hell of a fire, let alone explosions,it was head over a 150 miles away.8500 tons of amonium nitrite caught on fire, over 600 people killed.you can find actual video footage on you tube, they had a special on it on the History channel, under the Wrath of God series.considering it was a man made disaster.
TitsMcGee Posted October 9, 2008 Posted October 9, 2008 Metz, MI destroyed in 1908 by fire I grew up 5 mile away from what is left of Metz. A good chunk of relatives died in that fire, most of the people who died were the women and children that were on the train trying to get out of town. They were identified by peices of metal that were on their clothes or if they had gold teeth. This weekend they are commemorating the 100 year annaversiry.
