phee Posted October 10, 2008 Posted October 10, 2008 And we worry about our freedoms being taken away in the future... what about the current administration right now?

StormKnight (1) Posted October 10, 2008 Posted October 10, 2008 I saw this with no small personal outrage being a veteran myself. We all signed on the dotted line to serve and defend the constitution, and we knew our lives were going to be controlled for the most part. As single members, we were pretty much with minimal venting (aside from the rough partying that unfortunately makes the news, a few of us joined in a gaming group as our vent.) Families are something different. The military mindset encourages families, and the support is there in spades to nuture them. (e.g. single officers are not allowed base housing in continental US bases, families are.) And in the field away from them, those calls and mail from home are more valued than gold (for those of us who have people away, please send mail to them regularly.) And now NSA and DoD are violating that lifeline's integrity for my buddies, a lot of whom will be in service until at least 2014 due to the contract we signed? Sorry, but anyone who interferes with that deserves to be legally and morally bitchsmacked and smacked down like the insects they are.
Gaf The Horse With Tears Posted October 10, 2008 Posted October 10, 2008 *sigh* Constitutional Rights end at our borders. The only way this actibvity may be illegal is if they are tlaking to someone within the USA.

The only way this actibvity may be illegal is if they are tlaking to someone within the USA. It implies that they are, since spouses, etc would more then likely be here. I'm less concerned about legality then I am about it being a waste of resources and money.

I didn't read the article yet so I can't comment on specifics, but I do know that embassies, military bases, and other installations are considered US territory even if not in the USA. For example, I was born in Germany but since it was in a US military hospital on a US military base, I am 100% American and I'm considered to have been born within the USA. So, as long as soldiers stay within the checkpoints, they are fully guaranteed their Constitutional rights. Travel outside those checkpoints, then you are correct, Constitutional Rights may end.
Simon Bar Sinister Posted October 11, 2008 Posted October 11, 2008 I guess this means that, if your overseas phone conversation leads into phone sex, really give 'em a show!
