Need some advice on digital cameras

I'm looking to get a digital camera and haven't decided yet which one I want. I thought I would toss it around in DGN for some feedback. I was thinking along the lines of at least 5 megapixels, maybe a Kodak, price range around $400. A friend of mine (not on dgn) recomended this one: http://www.kodak.com/eknec/PageQuerier.jht...requestid=20648

I want to pick the best one I can for that pricerange. So what do you digital photo guru's recomend?

It really depends on what you want to use it for.

I researched digital cameras very extensively for my dad a couple years ago. My data would be too old for you by now, but the model I ended up recommending to him was a Sony. Thing is, he's a Pentax man from waaaaaaaay back, and I tend toward HP when it comes to technology. So personal preference took NO part in my decision - it was all based on features, price, reliability, etc.

There is a website out there totally dedicated to comparing digital cameras. Digitalcamerareview.com or something like that - you can find it by googling "camera review" or something of that nature.

As Daniel said, however, it depends on what you want in a camera. What I like about dcr.com's site is it lets you plug-in an extensive range of features you want, from type of camera to cost, extras, abilities, etc. and it'll bring up side-by-side comparisons of all cameras in their database (it's HUGE) that fit your needs.

I'll double-check and see if I can find that website and confirm it for you.

Oh - another great thing about it - they test each camera THOROUGHLY, and give very detailed results from picture quality, to how it feels in the hand, to pros/cons, you name it.

It's www.dpreview.com/

Have fun shopping!

You're welcome!

By the way, if you'd like, go a little outside of your price range - then check any more expensive models on eBay. And if you go that route, only buy from someone with a guarantee.

One model my dad was considering was something like $560 brand-new, and someone had one on eBay that was like new in all original packaging for $425.

Any Kodak camera I've had I've hated. I'm by no means an expert, but I sold my brand new Kodak digital because the photos were just horrible. Something off about the color.

My new one's a Canon and I like it much better. I've heard Sony is excellent too.

I've had good luck with Canon 35mm's. Can't vouch for their digitals, though if I recall correctly, they came up high on the list of recommendations to my dad.

BTW - the Pentax brand did NOT fare well.

I can tell you this. I have a hard time with night pics. I spent 200 dollars and can't take night pics!!!! Something to think about, also, the bigger the lens the better. I would probably wait until I can spend at least 200 but I am a photo buff.
