FBI Reported to Begin Probe of Florida Congressman

The FBI has reportedly begun its own preliminary investigation into an ABC News report that West Palm Beach Congressman Tim Mahoney (D-FL) hired an alleged mistress to work on his official staff and then paid her $121,000 to keep her from going public and filing suit after she was fired.

FBI agents have reportedly contacted members of Mahoney's staff and Tuesday sought legal files surrounding the secret settlement, according to current and former Mahoney Congressional and campaign staff workers.

A spokesperson for the FBI said she had been instructed to say "no comment" to press inquiries.

It would be unusual but not unprecedented for the FBI to open an investigation into a member of Congress three weeks before the election.

Yesterday, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi called for an "immediate and thorough" investigation of Mahoney by the House Ethics Committee.

According to the Mahoney staffers, his secret agreement with the woman, Patricia Allen, began in 2006 when he was campaigning for office, vowing to remove the "ethical cloud" he said had been left over the district by Republican Mark Foley, who resigned after it was revealed he had written lewd internet instant messages to Congressional pages and teenage boys.

Mahoney today said he took "full responsibility" for his actions but did not admit the affair and took no questions from reporters.

Mahoney's spokesperson did not have an immediate response about the FBI's probe.

How can we trust these people to run the country...when they can not be faithful to their marriage contracts?

...& seince when can you take "full responsibility"...but not admit to what you did?

Well, it seems.. according to the speach I just watched and the lack of outrage here... that if your a Democrat, this kind of thing is not worthy of mention and not an ethical problem.

Now, if this man were a Republican, people here would being throwing fits and talking about the moral corruption of the Republicans and his paying off the woman would be grounds for him to resign.

Funny thing is.. this man got into office by running on a platform of ethical reform.

I'm sure the Dems would be crying if it was a Republican...

{sickest part of it!}

Oh...I see the change the Dems are pushing...they have learned corruption & using your influences to further said corruptions...

The funniest part of the story is that this is the guy who replaced Mark Foley!

What's up with this district anyway, Gaf?

*sigh* I'm honestly not even surprised anymore. Without a good moral foundation: power corrupts. It's as simple as that. "Oh, I make lotsa money and I'm in politics. I should be able to do whatever the f* I want and then just pay people off, or find another way to silence them." It's bullshit. This is the kind of thing that even the Mafia looks down on.

First, allow me to address the sweeping generalizations you make about everyone here. 'People here' are a lot more diverse, politically, than you seem to give them credit for. Unless you're just trolling.

In the second place, no, I really think this dink ought to be probed until he can't sit down for a week and then tossed out of office as unceremoniously as can be managed, but that's for the bribes to shut the woman up, not for the affair. I could give a damn what goes on in his bedroom or in his pants. The reason I have such a field day with Republicans who get involved in these sorts of scandals is because almost invariably, THEY claim to be the arbiters of morality in this country, and also almost invariably fall far short of their moral high ground.

...True...too true..the hypocrisy that they cram into our mouths like so much cock...(I can say cock..right?)

People may well be more politically diverse than I give them credit for. I don't see evidence of it all that often. I do on the other hand see topics posted within minutes of a Republican scandal coming to light and everyone bashing on how the Republicans have done it again... and when a Democrat does it... crickets.

Then you should have a good old time with this piece of shit. He got into office claiming to hold the moral high ground. His whole platform was based on moral high ground.

A VERY good question...

I was going to make the same point. Republicans have always had the holier then thou attitude about morality. THAT's why they get crucified more then Dems. It's not that Dems are any less wrong.
