The gist of it is that people think it's offensive that kids are playing a video game which simulates the violent nature of a soldier's life in combat.

My only question is...but it's okay for kids to simulate, say, killing a prostitute in Grand Theft Auto?

What do you all think?

I think before you can answer the question you need to decide for yourself how much you think these types of games can actually influence people's behavior.

See, I'm not sure...

They've done studies on top of studies on top of studies showing that playing violent games leads to violent behavior. I don't know if in those studies there was a distinction between kinds of violence - fantasy versus real life type, for example.

And I don't know if I believe the results of the studies last on a long-term basis.

I also don't know if children in those studies were as old as 13 (or as young as as the case may have been)

Still, why is Grand Theft Auto okay but an Army game isn't? I have a hard time believing it has anything to do with the level of violence portrayed.

Possibly the fact that it's a local event and the organizers are far more easily swayed then something nation-wide?

My feelings are that the studies are far more likely to be correct then not, and that the younger the child is, the more likely they are to be influenced by the games. I also think that this is a parent's responsibility to restrict, not the governments. Maybe in the case of a public place where teens are likely to be without parents there might ned to be more supervision and regulation.

And while we're on the subject of video games... why is it ok to have violence but sex... OMG!!!! BAN IT!!!!!!! Since when is nudity and sexuality worse then violence and killing?

if we were influenced by games we'd all be running about in dark rooms with repetative bleepy music chomping down pills like in pacman.... oh wait....

Okay, I don't really play video games, except for Frogger and DDR, but I have to admit to having trouble wrapping my head around Sex, the Video Game.

Would it be classified as a shooter game? Simulation game? Action-Adventure (I'm thinking Zelda, but nekkid...)? Do you win points by turning tricks, while avoiding STDs? I would guess that it would generally be a two-player game, with the option to add more players for the more advanced...hmmm...Mbeau, you might be on to something!

I don't play them much either. But my girls do. And I keep an eye on what they play.
