stupid facists and mental illness views

The other day I was sitting the closest coffee shop to my town, in humm-dink whitmore lake. To give you an idea, whitmore lake people are drunks if they live on the lake and old farmers and "townes folk" if they don't. Most of them old geezers!

I have frequented this coffee shop because the people are nice, but EXTREMELY stingy with their drinks and hard core christian. Even a menonite girl who works there who wears a bun-bonnet. But they are close and generally very friendly.

So I go in there the other day and had to bite my lip. I heard conversations like this before there. A cranky old man was talking about how "people on medication" weren't good people and you shouldn't be around them! Aparently he started dating a good christian woman and later found out she was "on medication" and dropped her. They didn't even have the blls or whits to say "mental illness" or any diagnosis. So then it comes out this womans husband died of cancer and she had to take meds for depression (but he never put it like that because you NEVER say "depression" didn't you know that?) What a horrible man! And the whole time the owner is going along with it!

Fucking facist bullshit "good christian" coffee shop!!! I just walked out. They already don't like me lol.

What is YOUR oppinion?

sounds like a good cristian asshole to me. theres a lot of stuck up ones out there who take there faith as a means to chop people down. its like a huge ego boost for them to be out of touch with societies morals, ethics. and follow there own backward style of thinking

As someone with a mental illness who has had to deal with people like this, I hold no ill will. People, especially in small towns, have never really had to deal with mental illness and medication before. In small towns most people self medicated, those would be those drunks you talked about. Also, I don't think it should matter what relgion he is, even though he made no point in hiding it. He's closed minded when it comes to things that are different than what he is used to, which is another common thing for small towns. The fact he broke up with the woman problem is the best thing he could have done for her, because he is not the type she would have needed in her life.

As soon as you said some curmudgeon was complaining about medication, I just assumed it was Coumadin or something. ha!

Anyway...

+10.

And good for you for holding no ill will. In my observation, those who hold on to their rage just become more enraged over time and end up miserable. And who would want that for themselves?

I couldn't agree more with T. McGee about people self-medicating.

People often say 'What did we do before we had modern doctors and medicine?' The short answer - we died of alcohol poisoning alot more frequently.

If you think about it, fifty years ago, when you took medication for a mental illness, you were REALLY REALLY bad off. Stab your mother in the night kind of bad off. I'd be afraid of people who took medication to keep from stabbing their mothers, too.

I would hazard to guess that his knowledge of modern anti-depressants is far from what they actually are.

Still, it IS a depressing thing to overhear, isn't it?

Edited to add: If it were me, I would suggest he go read the Book of Job, start a novena to St. Dymphna, and, just to be on the safe side, throw in the Litany of Archangel Raphael while he's at it.

A rosary wouldn't hurt his soul either.

WTF?

yes. not sure if shes exactly from whitmore lake, no clue how she gets there. I guess she says that thier group is a bit more in touch with the modern world than some of the toher communities. Ive been in there alot in the past and she always gets asked if shes Amish lol thats how I knwo about her. not sure exactly WHERE her community lives, but you have to keep in mind, other than around the lake, 75% of whitmore lake is in the country. we are actually considered a part of Northfield Twp, which is a very expensive place to live, but we are on the far side of it. the great thing about whitmore like and living in the country tho? Its only 10minutes to downtown ann arbor :) people think its far away and its actually the north border of ann arbor.

and I agree abotu no ill will. Never ment him any! people are who people are and even if I confronted him it wouldnt change anything. Ive heard this a few times in there tho. I think twice by him and one or two times by other people. I swear they should hang a sign on the door "Christian assholes welcome" lol

I just thought it was worth sharing for oppinions because it was really uncalled for. I wish no ill will, but it doenst mean it didnt bother me. I have alot of trouble with mental illness, so it struck a personal chord. Im used to people being ignorant, but to be so OPENLY PAST ignorant was kinda bothersome.

Thanks for your oppinions guys!

yeah, he was refering to ALL medication given for mental illness. its just not "proper" I assume to lable it for a specific issue or he might sound like an ass lol.

Soooo...to clarify, when you say "Christian assholes welcome" you're referring to those who are assholes AND Christian, acknowledging the fact that you don't have to be an asshole in order to be Christian? I mean hell, I thought it was my Christianity that stopped me from being as asshole 9 times out of 10, but maybe I'm wrong...?

Because if you're not, this thread reeks of irony, especially since I've met BAZILLIONS more pagan, wiccan, agnostic, and athiest assholes in my life, yet still have yet to meet a Christian asshole in the flesh.

Just wondering. It's posts like your original one that tends to reinforce my point on a daily basis. However, if you let me know I'm wrong on that, I'll take it back.

I used to encounter a fair number of Christian assholes back when I was a Jehovah's Witness who believed everything which came from the governing body of that religion was divinely inspired, no matter how ridiculous and insipid.

Then, when I got out of that and started posting on an astral projection forum, I encountered plenty of pagan, wiccan love and light new age assholes who believed you should never have any negative thoughts or reactions to anything, and if you did, it was YOUR FAULT. In addition, many of them seemed to think that mere opinions and speculations were the same as bona fide truth (we create our OWN reality!).

Overall, I have a hard time deciding who was more infuriating.

I can't say I've met any Christians like that really, well actually I will say that I have met one person who is a creationist but realizes that most people don't agree with him and doesn't try to push it on anyone (real Christians never EVER push religion, anyone who does, imo, isn't a real Christian). That's about it. I won't discredit you on that, however, because I'm definately aware that brand of person definately exists whether I've met them personally or not.

Just I dunno, I brought it up because back when I used to hang out in Royal Oak, there was a group of missionaries that would stand on the corner across the street, not at all interferring with us, and the athiest, pagan, and wiccan kids would sit there and literally VERBALLY harass them calling them "facists" and "assholes" and saying how closed-minded they were, all the while while parading their "open mindedness" because they're wiccan/pagan or athiest....and I facepalmed almost everytime. I'd piss these kids off even more by going across the street to pray with the missionaries, not caring what harassment I would receive, and all the while never once trying to push anything on the pagan/wiccan/athiest kids and never even trying to defend myself. And these people would ridicule me and tell me I was silly for believing in Jesus when they believed in what I thought was totally ascinine bullshit like saying magic chants and FAIRIES?! I'm like "FAIRIES...? Like Tinkerbell?" and just sort of chuckle to myself, furthermore infuriating these so called open-minded "spritual" kid with their theories about fairies and hobgoblins and all sorts of Dungeons and Dragons style shit. Some of the stuff these people would try to get me believed had me thinking, "well...sounds like SOMEONE played a bit too much Zelda as a kid..." it was that ridiculous to me, and yet they had the nerve to discount Jesus...?

So that's kinda why the initial post in this thread got under my skin. I wanted to take the opportunity to let anyone out there who is of any of those sorts of faiths (or unfaiths) that Christian people are harassed MUCH more than any of you. Deal with it .

I didn't think you meant any ill will. :)

You sound to be a very nice and reasonable person.

I guess I never realized that about whitmore lake...anything more than fifteen minutes from my house might as well be Idaho lol. Seriously, I can't find my way out of a wet paper bag. Ha!

And, hey, even Christian assholes need their caffeine fix, right? :)

no no, you misunderstood. LOTS of people are assholes. not saying that you have to be an asshole to be christian. the point was referencing that its a christian coffee shop, thats all they talk about in there and the whole story was based off the idea that this guy was ripping on people on medication for even mild depression because of his "good christian values". not in the least did I ANYWHERE say all christians were assholes or that you could only go in there being an asshole if you were christian.

I might have misunderstood your typing, because I dont kwo you very well, but did you have your panties in a pinch about this??? I dont call myself christian because I dont think I have the RIGHT do define myself that way without ALL my beliefs being in that religion. but Id say that 75-80% of my beliefs have alot to do with christianity. but I dont lable myself to any other religion either. I respect christianity very dearly. I think for the most part all religion is good. its the facists assholes I have an issue with, not the religion. its the people, not the beliefs, for any form of religion. so dont get me wrong. Im sorry if you took offense to what I was saying because it wasnt meant to be such. if they were a facist hindu or a cranky-ass buhdist Id be bitching about tHAT instead lol.

hope you except my explanation :) no ill-will intended :)

I have been there too. Thats when I was fighting my feelingsd about christianity. actualy, Ive had a few times almost the exact same scenerio. used to hang in front of Caribou coffee when I was 17 and when the kids would ridicule the christians I would actually go over to them and appologize for thier actions and tell them what they were doing was great. I also have prayed with them and when I was a member of a certain church I went and actually was ONE of those people. but I wasnt feeling comfortable being on both sides of the scene. like I said, I was questioning myself at that time of my life. but Ive been there. dont discredit me just because I was bitching about a christian facist. keep in mind I said FACIST- I never knocked down christians at ALL. at least not christians in general. its was solely directed at this particular coffee shop and the people that went to far and upset me. so I have no right to be upset that they were saying such things about mental illness??? just because they WERE christian? nevermind. I didnt even mean it that way.

Such attitudes are certainly not limited to hardcore pseudoChristians or small town denizens. We had a thread on here a while back about mental illnes/medications... some of the opinions expressed were truly appalling to me. Not just me, either... a lot of feathers were ruffled by that one.

...First...KUDOS for your "ACTUAL CHRISTIAN SELF"...(I only know 3-4 REAL Christians...& count you among them.)

...Second...& I am not trying to Martyer meself here...BUT..try being of a "BLENDED" Faith...I get it from BOTH SIDES...can you imagine what my Brother Thelemites had to say about my Baptism? How many Coven Members (MY FAMILIA)(*EMO PAUSE*) stopped talking to me?

Yeah...try to carry a Cross & Pent...

LASTLY...I have found there are assholes abundant in ANY place where there are people believing things..(I am told I am counted amongst them at times)..I figure, "Oh well...I have always been an ass man...at least they are naming me after my favorite part!!!"

HAHAHAHA!!!

The better answer...as some of us still use it...

Genesis 1:29

And God said, "Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit; you shall have them for food.

There are a plethora of medicinal herbs...for things from Gout..to muscle tension..to stress..to anxiety...

..shit...they make several drugs to mimic the effects of herbs...like Valume (sp?)..it is synthetic Valerian Root.

Albeit...many are suspended in an alcohol base...but it is measured in DROPS...not shots...so your kidney & liver does not get pickled so fast...

...but when you look at the detrimental effects of prescription medicines...that JUST reek havoc on the ENTIRE Human system...

...liver, kidney, spleen, pancreas, stomach, intestines, nervous system...not to mention, most anti-psycotics, anti-depressants, anti-anxiety drugs...tend to put the user in a sleepy haze...(I do not believe we let people drive on drugs)...

Whilst I agree that a Rosary now & again WILL help Unify the Mind & Soul...mostly R.Catholics, & Orthodox use them...so..yeah..that guy would most likely give us a good verbal thrashing for insinuating that, "He's not doing it right.." No matter how good the idea is...if his Preiat/Pastor did not tell him...it is the Devils work...(oops..I'm being an "ASSHOLE")...

They could say the same to you. You discount fairies, but believe a dude turned water into wine and walked on water?

As for assholes, it really doesnt matter, every religion has its nutbags and assholes. I think her point was that they claimed to be very religious, yet showed such poor attitude for people who were having a hard time.

Personally, I dont go in for the whole fairy business (my religion is votive, not magical), but I think your poor opinion of pagans in general is colored by your experience with the little groups youve encountered. Like christians, there are a LOT of different kinds of pagans. Dont color the whole lot of us with the same broad brush. And as for harassment? Most people dont give a shit if youre christian. You get weirder looks for being anything else. Frankly, the most harassed religion right now isnt any type of christian or pagan, but Islamic. I think right now they'd corner the market on being most harassed.

EXACTLY! Moral of the story: If you're going to tell me that I believe in something totally ridiculous and more than likely impossible, do not turn around and believe in something just as massively impossible and try to say you're right, it makes you look r-tarded.

Youve run into pagans that think Jesus is ridiculous?

Then they were kinda..... funny...... LOL

Most I know believe he's just another religious figure..... just not *their* religious figure. Just like most polytheistic pagans will tell you that the christian god exists, but that they dont worship him.

You need to meet some better pagans, to repair the bad opinion those ones have left you with, so we dont all look so retarded. :p

I totally agree. I was going to say that too- but got off on a tangent defending myself lol. even people who arent actually muslim but are called "caldians" (middle eastern catholics- had lots of them where I grew up and thats what they refered to themselves as. didnt learn thats why til later). anyone with tank skin and black hair is still often being harassed at one point or another.
