I have a renewed respect for records

As some of you may remember my dad passed away on September 12. One of the things we have been doing is going throught the multiple records he has collected over the years to see what we want to keep as keepsakes. You heard me right RECORDS. The large things that pre-date CD'S and downloading.

As the title says I have a new respect for records. You'd think after years of being in crates in the basement that they wouldn't sound like much. Boy was I wrong! they sound fantastic! Some even sound like they we're recorded recently.

One example is a record I thought we'd given away. Michael Jackson's Thriller. Twenty five years old and it sounds awesome.

So this means I'm on a record kick. Salvation Army and Goodwill have them but I think I'm gonna go the online route so I get a better chance of getting the things I like. Needless to say going through our records has put a smile on my face that is all too often missing these days. (Another one that sounds great is Seargent Pepper, sorry just had to blurt that one out lol)

A brand new record has the best fidelity there is. Nothing can be the sound except being there live.

Sorry to hear about your dad.

If those records are in good shape, Hold on to them. They could very well be worth ALOT of money..

My Dad has a lot. He had original Beatles and Elvis records that were in really good shape.

Unfortunately, when my little brother moved in their house, he moved them all to the garage and they sat in wet and nasty for three years. All the casings are destroyed and probably the records themselves too. :(

I have to concur with Scott on the fidelity issue. I still keep vinyl around for that very issue. If you are going to do records, make sure the needle is changed religiously every year or sooner. a dull needle will ruin the records as sure as the heat and the dust. a good record duster helps as well.

the casings are the BEST part thou. that and the cover art on the record itself, theres never not enough room for coverart on them things. shit. id probly set something up on the wall to display them if the covers where still around

Oh, I know. I was extremely disappointed. I'm not surprised though given the shape of that house when he moved out. We're STILL working on things months later.

Gatefold record sleeeves made great rolling/cleaning trays in a pinch. :)

That sucks. Apparently, your brother has no respect for stuff like that. With both of my parents being deceased, my brothers & I inherited a record cabinet full of 78's. Those predate even the record albums. Some of them date back to 1929. Most of them are warped due to age but I wouldn't get rid of them for ANYTHING.
