Today... in a stump speach focusing on National Security... Obama called for a civilian national security force..

"We cannot continue to rely on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives we've set. We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded."

I can't find the video on many sights and cant directly link it...

Isn't national security the main reason we have a military? Where in the Constitution does the President have the authority to create anything like this? Is it going to take an oath to up-hold the constitution or support the President?

I'm going to assume that terrorism is motivating this idea. Which begs the question: Is terrorism and fighting it fundamentally different then protecting our borders from a standing army? Is the military trained to do this? Is law enforcement ? Should they be?

I can't think of what they would really do...

except get around that silly little thing called the Constitution... that part that keeps our military from operating on US citizens.

It would make it easy to pull "sleepers" in for questioning...

and look for anyone not acting patriotic...

or talking the wrong way...

Why does Obama need an army that is outside the constraints of the Constitution...

It says the speech was on July 2nd. Not yesterday. So now I'm confused as to why this blog is bringing it up again if they reported on it earlier. And the implications from the link I posted sound more like I would imagine him meaning. Still.. That's a lot of new potential taxes for what benefit?

Just five days later, the July 7 issue of Defense News published an interview in which Obama elaborated on his goals.

“I believe we can reconfigure our civilian national-security force. We still have a national security apparatus on the civilian side, in the way the State Department is structured and USAID, that harkens back to the Cold War,” Obama said.

“We need to be able to deploy teams that combine agricultural specialists and engineers and linguists and cultural specialists who are prepared to go into some of the most dangerous areas alongside our military,” he said.

If civilians care to organize in such a way to defend their country, don't we already have that option through the various branches of the military, or law enforcement? I guess I don't understand what their purpose would be that our current system doesn't already handle?
