Sorry if my history is sorely lacking, but what about militias? Are they legal? "by the people, for the people" and all that.... What's wrong with protecting ourselves?

What do militias have to do with national police forces? The national guards are the militias, btw. There's just nothing against the law in creating your own... they're pretty much worthless though, as history has proven.

It's not like we need protection from anything but our government anyways....

Ironic, considering it's our government that's responsible for that protection from foreign powers, isn't it?

Actually, they're not. That's a common misconception. The Militia Act of *mumblemumble* was written before the National Guard was even established. I could go into more detail but I don't have much time right now. But, for starters, the video available on this page does a decent job introducing the concept.

Many free countries would like to prove otherwise, America and Croatia to name but a few.

The Militia Act is what created the national guard. The national guard is the successor to state sponsored militias. All the militia act did was say "hey fuckers, you're trash.. conform to military standards 5yrs from today."

to sum up: Pre Act - militias were state sponsored and compliant only on themselves for training and standards, barely receiving funding from the federal government.

Post Act - militias are still state sponsored and controlled, but are organized and trained under the standards of the regular military. funding is increased, and more federal authority given for callups.

Many free countries would like to prove otherwise, America and Croatia to name but a few.

Washington himself stated militias were trash, desertion was high, re-ups were nill. It was french trained/equipped Regular troops, along with french intervention, that won our freedom.

1812 further proved that militias were trash, america had its ass handed to it successively until the Regulars were manned and trained properly. From off the top of my head, the ONLY militia unit that had any sort of success during this war was Jackson at New Orleans.

of course, these are just how i interpret history.

Last I heard about using citizens to watch the border had to do with cameras going up online and allowing people to sit on their computer and send in reports if anything was seen. Other than that, there is a private group of citizens already that help the border patrol but on their own accord. I remember some media doing a story on it, because they were thought to be hurting the illegals or torturing them. Course when the media went with them as they did their job they brought water and a little food over to the fenceline of the ones who were about to cross but were stopped.

Why does this thread bring this to mind?

The Canadians rangers are civilians who guard their northern boarders. They train them and equip them with a 303. Their role is to watch for possible invaders and report to the military, not engage the enemy. Some of our own militia is better trained then our military in these roles. Our military focuses too much on urban and desert combat now. I dont think our government should totally rely on civilians but I think its not a total bad idea. I am prepped and ready. Our forfathers preferred a militia because a army historically has been known to take over a government. I agree we have some morons out there but I think with a screening process and training it might not be bad.

I'm thinking I'm going to be moving to AZ, soon! Can't wait! I friggin' love it here! The heat doesn't bother me at all and the best part? NO SNOW!!! (S.N.O.W. - Shit  No One Wants)   Been staying in Bullhead City where the kids and grandkids live. Next, we're going to the wife's cousin's which is a ways North of Kingman, in the middle of nowhere, where we actually plan to move.   I really like Bullhead. It's a nice little town. Not overcrowded like Colorado Springs has become, at all. Very light traffic, reasonable prices on everything, low taxes, etc. The river offers a lot to do, with a lot of beaches and campgrounds all around it.   But yeah even though we've been over 110º-115º F just about every day,  I can handle it!  What I can't handle anymore, is snow and being cold. Just tired of it. Give me the desert over a blizzard any day!

Nope, we wasn't doing anything. I didn't want to go by myself.  I ended up doing karaoke here. It would of been a perfect day to go, though.
