Oh_My_Goth Posted November 20, 2008 Posted November 20, 2008 I celebrate all holidays..... They have deeper meaning than just gifts and food kids.....
Destroit Posted November 20, 2008 Posted November 20, 2008 I have never celebrated Father's Day and never will.
Rev.Reverence Posted November 20, 2008 Posted November 20, 2008 I celebrate all holidays.....They have deeper meaning than just gifts and food kids..... ...they do...they REALLY do.
Gaf The Horse With Tears Posted November 20, 2008 Posted November 20, 2008 Kwanzaa, Sweetest Day, all of the other made up holidays (every day actually has a holiday associated with it.) but.. I am trying to get my wife to celebrate Steak and BJ day.
StormKnight (1) Posted November 20, 2008 Posted November 20, 2008 but.. I am trying to get my wife to celebrate Steak and BJ day. +1...Good one, Gaf. Can you imagine though...some people around the workplace get people things for v-day, "just because." I can only go down a dark, twisted, yet fun path of having a similar thing happening on Steak and BJ day. Imagine the receptionist down the hall dropping off a fillet mignon on your desk before...well, you should get the idea...and "just because" it is S&BJ Day.
Guest greyhalo Posted November 20, 2008 Posted November 20, 2008 I'll celebrate any day that's a paid holiday for me. In fact, I get two paid holidays for Thanksgiving next week. However, I do not celebrate Mardi Gras anymore now that I’m back in Michigan. I gave up living on a parade route New Orleans and getting tons of free beads every year for freakin’ paczkis. I’m a Polack and grew up in Hamtramck, and I still hate those nasty fried donuts filled with drippy jelly. The ones with prune filling are appalling.
Gaf The Horse With Tears Posted November 20, 2008 Posted November 20, 2008 "Free" beads? I thought there was something you had to do to get them?
Guest greyhalo Posted November 20, 2008 Posted November 20, 2008 "Free" beads? I thought there was something you had to do to get them? That's only in the French Quarter. I lived in a nice residential neighborhood. All I had to do was sit on my front porch and raise my hands to get tons of beads. They throw stuffed animals, toys, plastic cups, moon pies, etc. from floats on Mardi Gras day. It's a lot of fun for kids and families. It's really nothing like those "Girls Gone Wild" videos. They give Mardi Gras a bad wrap.
zenaleigh Posted November 20, 2008 Posted November 20, 2008 Okay I lied, I do sort of celebrate Christmas, I love the lights, decorating the tree, good cheer, the music, especially The Lost Christmas Eve:Trans Siberian Orchestra and lots and lots of snow, but no gifts, or mid. mass, just spreading love and hope around
Head Wreck Posted November 20, 2008 Posted November 20, 2008 my birthday. i'll celebrate others but i do not like revealing my birth date to many people
Onyx Posted November 20, 2008 Posted November 20, 2008 I dont celebrate christmas, thanksgiving, easter and anyother holidays I deem pointless or just a money grab. What holidays do you bypass? I celebrate everything I possibly can with my kids because I'm goofy that way and holidays provide a break the tedium of daily life, but I do it in my own way, usually something we invent ourselves with a bit of traditional things mixed in. I'll use any excuse to break from routine. To me there are ways to celebrate almost any holiday - for instance if you didn't have a good parent or have lost yours you could give a card to someone who has been like parent or mentor to you. I guess I can see why some native Americans wouldn't want to celebrate Thanksgiving, but to me a holiday can be changed to fit your own meaning. I've got some Cherokee on my mom's side but to me that's not something I'm going to roll around in and bitch about. It's not something that happened in my lifetime. Almost everyone can be thankful for something if it's just the fact that you aren't on fire at this very moment or maybe you have eyes that still function to read this board. I drive my kids absolutely crazy, dressing up for St. Patrick's day in green from head to toe (not a drop of irish blood in me at all), doing a horrible job of talking like a pirate on talk like a pirate day, eating Chinese food on Christmas, whatever we come up with. Our tree one year was in a Nightmare before Christmas theme - they loved that and so did I. I like to find obscure holidays and surprise them. They roll their eyes but I think secretly they find most of it fun (except the pirate talk - they hide and cover their ears because I can't do it but try anyway).
Msterbeau Posted November 20, 2008 Posted November 20, 2008 and I still hate those nasty fried donuts filled with drippy jelly. The ones with prune filling are appalling. Sacrilege!!

Guest greyhalo Posted November 21, 2008 Posted November 21, 2008 Oh, then I got these beads for nothing. The only thing I ever flashed in New Orleans was by bellybutton.
Bernadette Posted November 21, 2008 Posted November 21, 2008 I'll celebrate any day that's a paid holiday for me. In fact, I get two paid holidays for Thanksgiving next week. Greyhalo - I like your thinking! N.O. is cool- I was an avid participant of the Jazzfest for a few years running. As for Holidays, I like Halloween best. I'm not that into Christmas, too commercialized. I can do without Sweetest Day cheesyness for sure. I do enjoy Independence day. And honor Veterans Day. I buy into the respect and rememberance of Father's Day, Mother's Day, etc. I do agree that true Holidays are and should be fun for kids!
Gaf The Horse With Tears Posted November 21, 2008 Posted November 21, 2008 Then there is some small hope... and why is everyone so shocked when I get a bit flirty?\ I may be old and married... but I am not dead.
taysteewonderbunny Posted November 21, 2008 Posted November 21, 2008 Everything but Bacon Day. So, you celebrate Eggs Day, Hashbrowns Day, Rye Toast with Orange Marmalade Day, but Bacon Day just isn't a serious enough holiday for you?
Msterbeau Posted November 21, 2008 Posted November 21, 2008 So, you celebrate Eggs Day, Hashbrowns Day, Rye Toast with Orange Marmalade Day, but Bacon Day just isn't a serious enough holiday for you? No.. Just the opposite, since the title is about holidays you DON'T celebrate.
Simon Bar Sinister Posted November 21, 2008 Posted November 21, 2008 National BBQ Day!! ...better make it a month!
Guest greyhalo Posted November 21, 2008 Posted November 21, 2008 Then there is some small hope... and why is everyone so shocked when I get a bit flirty?\ I may be old and married... but I am not dead. Though I gave you a shocked look, I was just teasing...
Gauge Posted November 21, 2008 Posted November 21, 2008 i pretty much dont celebrate anything. the extent of my holidays are (maybe twice a year) visiting the family and leaving before the praying/opening gifts/church/whatever. i do halloween but thats about it.
Msterbeau Posted November 21, 2008 Posted November 21, 2008 BEER DAY!!nough said Every day is BEER DAY!
TitsMcGee Posted November 21, 2008 Posted November 21, 2008 but.. I am trying to get my wife to celebrate Steak and BJ day. I will never look at my birthday the same way again..Thanks Gaf lol
Brenda Starrr Posted November 21, 2008 Posted November 21, 2008 See I celebrate all the holidays, even the relgious ones. I'm not particularly religious but thats how I was raised. I don't spend money on anyone either seeing as I make my own gifts, and yarn is rather cheap. Kids these days expect to much at the holidays, like they are entitled to so much just because of the day. I'd rather be with my family and know they love me then to get stuff. But that's just my two cents worth I celebrate all holidays.....They have deeper meaning than just gifts and food kids..... THIS is why I celebrate. The rest of you are looking at it the WRONG way. Make it about something OTHER than the almighty dollar.
