Here comes a goofy question... Define progressive Rock...

Would Tool, or A Perfect Circle count? How about Deftones, or TSO?

I'm really asking cause I don't know, not to be a music elitist... I have a hard time with musical labels so I have a hard time answering this.

Progressive to me, is technical and experimental, with a pop hook. ;)

Even if I hated their music, I'd still listen to them for Danny Carey's godlike drumming. :jamin:jamin:jamin

A lot of bands mentioned here I think are on people's list because they are strictly thinking in terms of musicianship. Which is fine but is that really what matters most?

Or could a band be defined as progressive because of their thought process? Pushing the boundries of recording/technology for their time or simply just doing things that no one had ever tried before?

Even though The Beatles were never masters of their instruments they (I feel) were the very first 'progressive' rock band. I mean, they went from writing pop songs to some really advanced music. They revolutionized recording techniques and went beyond what had been done before.

Also, they didn't have anyone else as a reference point like every band that came after. They couldn't say, we want this song to sound like so and so's song from that record they did last year. And, they didn't have a million and one stomp boxes and effects pedals to choose from.

So my pick would be The Beatles for pure originality.

Im not asking you to conform and I'm not saying that all music is the same Its just music has to be separated so we can find it easier

progressive rock is roughly a form of rock music that evolved in the late-1960s and early 1970s as part of a "mostly British attempt to elevate rock music to new levels of artistic credibility.

lets not forget ELO for mixing classical with rock

I've been an ELO fan since early childhood. My mother was very into them.

On a completely different level of progressive, what about System Of A Down? I think they qualify to be included in this genre.
