'I'm a human pet': The Goth teenager whose fiance walks her around on a dog leadBy CHRIS BROOKE

Last updated at 16:43 23 January 2008

Comments (96) Add to My Stories Given that she describes herself as a human pet ? and is happy to walk around on a lead ? Tasha Maltby is used to odd looks and even odder remarks.

But nothing had prepared her for the reaction of the bus driver who allegedly told the self-styled Goth and her boyfriend: "We don't let freaks and dogs like you on."

Miss Maltby and her fiance Dani Graves were so angered they have complained to the bus company of being "victimised".

Going walkies: Dani Graves and girlfriend Tasha Maltby were allegedly barred from a bus

"It is definitely discrimination, almost like a hate crime," 19-year-old Miss Maltby said yesterday.

The music technology student had this defence of her lifestyle.

"I am a pet, I generally act animal like and I lead a really easy life," she said.

"I don't cook or clean and I don't go anywhere without Dani. It might seem strange but it makes us both happy. It's my culture and my choice. It isn't hurting anyone."

The bus driver, however, has obviously not been listening.

He has repeatedly refused to allow Mr Graves, 25, and his "pet" on to his bus in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire.

Last month, with Miss Maltby on a leash as usual, the couple tried to board a bus at the bus station.

The driver, who was off duty, was standing near the door.

Mr Graves alleged: "He shoved me off the bus. He called us freaks and he called Tasha a dog.

"He said, 'We don't let freaks and dogs like you on'.

slideshow 74 more What's the deal with all the emo-hate this year? Not only are they getting beat up in Mexico and smeared in the UK media, they're now about to be banned in Russia. Government there is considering a law that would effectively make emo and its various relatives (goth, punk, etc) illegal. Why? Because apparently eyeliner and long bangs lead to anarchy and suicide.

Ironically, laws like these only make the whole emo thing more appealing to kids. If parents embraced goth, think kids would follow suit? Sunday school clothes would quickly become the new punk.

An emo ban is dumb on a number of levels. One, many people just like the fashion and have no predilection to kill themselves when they wear black. Two, if someone really is depressed, dark clothes and depressing music are likely symptoms rather than causes. Government resources would be better spent looking at the real causes of mental health problems if they are common among teenagers. Three, a lot of emo kids are actually dealing with their feelings by expressing them. Four, prohibiting these types of things will only make them more powerful. Five, banning skinny, effeminate males can be seen as thinly-veiled homophobia.

Russia is considering a new law that would make hardcore punk style emo and goth music illegal, saying that they are "negative culture" which encourage depression, social withdrawal and even suicide. A source reports that legislation is now being created to regulate websites and have emo and goth fashion banned in schools and government buildings. The laws are meant to protect the supposed “dangerous teen trend” which encourage depression and suicide.

Calling the emo/goth lifestyle “a dangerous teen trend”, the Russian government is drafting a proposal that will regulate emo websites and ban the black clad kids from schools and government buildings. The “Government Strategy In The Sphere Of Spiritual And Ethical Education” bill aims to crush the emo subculture, calling it a “social danger” and “a threat to national stability”.

This bill is being developed partially in reaction to the recent suicide of British teenager Hannah Bond. Her death was questionably linked to the teenager’s following of emo band “My Chemical Romance”. Critics of the emo music and lifestyle feel the music’s dark imagery and themes of sadness and despair lead to a preoccupation with death and suicide.

I've read the first article when it came out. The second I've heard of parts of that too.

However the statement "If parents embraced goth, think kids would follow suit? Sunday school clothes would quickly become the new punk." is incorrect. I know a lot of gothic parents (yourself included) who's children also embrace the lifestyle.

I love living in the USA, having freedom of expression clearly defined in the most important government document is awesome.

The outcry over Sophie ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sophie_Lancaster ) has died down though, which is kind of sad. If you're not outraged you're not paying attention. Discrimination against our kind still goes on in this country especially in the job industry where the only places we can work really is in a warehouse, a hot topic, or for yourself if you're lucky enough.
