StormKnight (1) Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 Been there, popped them. The treatment for these ones that get out of control is to incise them and let them drain (incision and drainage, or I&D.) Then it gets packed with gauze (changed daily,) and allowed to heal from the inside out. Done enough of these in the ER.

StormKnight (1) Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 The big ones are painful. And bright red. The instant you relieve the pressure from under the skin, the red litterally fades away in seconds. Always impresses the 3rd year students. The most painful thing is not the incision, it is the taking down of loculations (or little pockets that form as the infection migrates beyond the hair follicle.) If you don't, the infection does not go away.
Eevee Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 Puss and puke are the two things that kept me out of the medical profession. I didn't even think of the puss! And I plan to become a veterinarian!

Destroit Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 target="_blank It's pretty sick. Pretty fantastic. Also pretty close to home... that's from a brown recluse, we have them in Michigan I used to hang out with a guy named Rob who was FILTHY and didn't take care of himself like he should have. He gets bit by a Brown Recluse, this was in Hazel Park, and he doesn't go in for treatment. The thing was on his forearm and it got to be HUGE, like the size of a huge pussing golfball under his skin, and pussing over the surface of his skin, it was GROSS. One day he's walking into the kitchen and hits his arm on the door jam, the thing pops and goes SPLAT all over the the place. He should be grateful that happened because many people lose limbs due to these types of bites.

He almost lost his arm, was in ICU for like two weeks. I saw the wound, it was rather...interesting.
