BOSTON (AP) - A lesbian couple who led the fight for gay marriage in Massachusetts has filed for divorce. Julie and Hillary Goodridge were among seven gay couples who filed a lawsuit that led to a court ruling making Massachusetts the first state to legalize same-sex marriages in 2004. The couple became the public face of the debate in the state and married the first day same-sex marriages became legal.

The divorce case was filed last week in Suffolk Probate and Family Court and was not unexpected. The couple announced they were separating in 2006.

Messages left for the Goodridges were not immediately returned Tuesday.

I'm not sure why this made me laugh so hard.

Whilst I can assess the Irony..& share a chuckle...I think that this is indicative of a greater problem.

Americans are just plain BAD at sticking to their VOWS...whether it be straight or gay (& I think the Gays win when you look into the stats for couples longevity)...

...& I am not referring to strictly relationship stuff...I mean to say that the general population in this country is bad at keeping their word...from diets...to the asinine New Years resolutions (most will be in the trash by now)...

The problem ain't with homosexuality. The problem is with marriage.

I think the problem lies not with the institution of Marriage...but in the lightheartedness in entering such an arrangement...the goal is to live your WHOLE LIFE TOGETHER (note I did not say "LIVES")...

...when things get difficult...the first reaction of many is to give up & run away...not to apply themselves to making it work better...this problem reaches FAR DEEPER than you would think at first glance...

..the children are learning this as well...they WANT the Romantic Commitment that their G-parents/G-G-parents had & enjoyed...but there are few examples of this in the Media or the Communities they are being raised in. If it takes more than a week to a season to accomplish...it is not worth it for them...

..I see it to often..."I think she is the one...I'm gonna' pop the question"...not..."I KNOW HER...SHE IS THE ONE."

The right to fight legally...which is good because in a marriage where two people work its got to be done to figure out who gets what.

My cousin lost a lot of stuff cause her girl wanted to drag her through court as freinds and it was too hard to prove who bought what ect so she gave up and ended up losing more that way as her girl didn't work much and was good at lying and draggin things out and being unfair.

Given the divorce rate in this country, I'd expect at least 2 of the remaining couples involved in that suit to divorce as well...assuming they haven't already.

I find this funny actually. I think they realized that sometimes marriage isn't all that it's cracked up to be.
