Homicidalheathen Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 Saturday, January 31, 2009 Baby left at Detroit fire house Santiago Esparza / The Detroit News DETROIT -- A woman dropped off a baby at a Detroit Fire Department station Friday, which is allowable under Michigan's Safe Haven law. The child was left with Engine 59 at Curtis and Southfield, senior fire officials said. The child was taken to Children's Hospital for an examination, the officials said. This is the second time in recent years that a child has been dropped off at a station, senior fire officials said. Michigan's law allows newborns to be dropped off with a hospital staffer, police officers, firefighters or emergency medical services technicians who are on duty. The law went into effect in 2001. Fire officials were unsure of the baby's gender. Also, this week Wyandotte Police said it was seeking information about the mother of the newborn baby who left the child at Wyandotte Henry Ford Hospital on Thursday. Police said it needs medical information from the mother, although the baby appears healthy. TitsMcGee Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 I think safe haven laws are good. Although I doubt that mother is going to come forward for fear of being prosecuted for abandoning the baby, safe haven law or not.

Destroit Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 Safe Haven laws are amazing, I don't understand why anyone would think otherwise. It's better that babies are abandoned in the winter at places like fire departments, hospitals, and police stations where they WILL be taken care of and put up for adoption, rather than in a freezing cold dumpster or garbage can where they have almost no hope at all for survival.

Der Wolf von Krieg Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 I do believe a State in the South had a law recently where you could drop off any child up to age 18 with the no questions asked. Then if my memory serves me correct one parent dropped off like 6 or 7 of their children and the State then relized it was a mistake for older children and dropped the policy. If they had that law when I was little and my family was driving to Disneyland I could here my dad say now that I better be good or they would drive thru to that State and drop me off! But I agree with those above that a infant law is very good for I hate to hear when a small helpless child is found in a dumpster. How could a innocent person just brought into the world do something so cruel to deserve such a fate?

That was Nebraska dear, they have since fixed that law after people from out of state were bringing their troubled teens. Now I believe it's up to one year of age but don't quote me on it.
