*puts on tin hat*

..I was re-reading the constitution...'cause honestly..I don't remember where it sais that America is supposed to be a "capitalist environment"...& I don't see how having a semi-socialist/semi-capitalist environment is not the answer.

I doesn't say it anywhere at all.

It's just something people are resistant to because of our fears during the Cold War. In truth it's something that can work. It's usually in the most dire times that something must be tried that we haven't done yet. Unfortunately for some (but not most) it's when a lot of ideas are proven to work

Capitalism and Socialism can co-exist. Thats not the problem with your scenario, the fact that we (the USA) are a Representative Democracy in the form of a Constitutional Republic is. Thats the part that does not go well with Socialism.

Why not?

OTHER than the aforementioned preconceptions.

because Socialism is all about government control of all aspects of our lives to ensure that everyone is equal in every way and so that noone ever has it better than anyone else. Where as a Republic is about limited government that ensures the maximum Liberty of every citizen. The two concepts don't go well together.

The Social Market Economy

btw, Germany is the only country in the UE that isn't suffering from this economic down turn. At least, it's the least affected.

Thanks for posting the link.

But it thats not true, some of the big banks have here also problems and Daimler, BMW and Opel are suffering.

Especially Opel as a 100% subsidiary of GM is in deep in the dept. Only Volkswagen Audi and Porsche are doing well.

I didn't say they (Germany) were completly insulated from it... just not as bad off as everyone else.
