I'm so shallow sometimes. I hope to overcome my own tendency to be so influenced by appearances (look how disgusted the audience members looked).

It seems enough to put the spotlight on someone who is talented who is not 25, thin and beautiful. Why put the focus on the kitsch? *this is not directed at Onyx, but at the way the media has portrayed this woman*

Yes, she did, also mentioning her age and the fact that she had never been married or even kissed. She said it twice and also pointed it out in several outside interviews.

The press is definitely running with that angle, but those types of shows are notoriously shallow and it really points out the contrast and how appearances are weighted so heavily.

She said in another interview that her mother had often tried to get her to audition for talent shows but she was too shy. When her mother passed on she made a promise to go ahead and use her talent and have the courage to try, and she definitely made an excellent performance.
