BEDFORD, Pa. - In exchange for no jail time, a woman and her adult daughter have agreed to stand outside a Pennsylvania courthouse holding signs saying they stole a gift card from a 9-year-old girl on her birthday.

Fifty-six-year-old Evelyn Border and 35-year-old Tina Griekspoor stood outside the court for 4 1/2 hours Tuesday. They held signs that read: "I stole from a 9-year-old girl on her birthday! Don't steal or this could happen to you!"

Because the women agreed to hold the signs, Bedford County District Attorney Bill Higgins says he'll ask for probation instead of jail when they plead guilty to the theft.

Higgins says they swiped a gift card that the girl set on a shelf while a Walmart employee helped her.

The girl's mother planned to drive by the courthouse to teach her daughter the importance of obeying the law.

Wow.. People suck.

Robbing people has hit an all time low. I'm in favor of more punishments like the one the two women received but for a longer period of time like two weeks not 4 and a half hours. Humiliation is a wonderful punishment.

I agree... 4 1/2 hours really isn't that long to be punished for stealing from a child. I like the concept though... Less bodies to pay for in jail.

What do parents try to teach their children? Anything? *sigh*

*disclaimer: Not all parents suck balls this much. Some are actually quite good... The hard part seems to be in the bad outweighing the good.

Some parents are too busy trying to be friends with their kids rather than parenting them.

i dont think the court house was a good enough setting to place these two...i think they should have been placed in a more public area...on the corner of a busy intersection or main road...something along those lines...and while holding the sign she should be given a bull horn and every 10 minutes she should speak into it and say what the sign says "I stole from a 9 year old girl on her brithday"

Thanks. It's too bad our society is too worried about someone getting their precious feelings hurt even if they did something wrong.

For anyone that thinks this punishment wasn't harsh enough...it WAS in a town of only 3,141 peoples (at the 2000 census, probably not changed much, if the records stayed steady.)

 I think it fit like a glove...everyone that did not see them, can get a run down on the Thanksgiving from their cousin.

Hahahahha, very true! With small towns, word gets around FAST. I'm sure some one snapped a pic with they're cell phone too just to keep it going around. I would. lol

I wonder also though, these were two adults, 56 and 35 years old who stole from a 9 year old child. Shouldn't they have had to at least replace the money the poor kid is missing? I don't see anything about restitution.

I think they should be fined at least twice the amount (or more) and have the money go to that child they swiped the birthday money from.

I get the feeling that trash like this would prolly love the attention

In a case like this I'll vote for that! Can you imagine how brokenhearted that child was? I'll throw some rotten fruit at them to boot.
