:devil What this state needs to do is fix these damn roads that wreck our vehicles every day we go to work. They got to do something to get rid of this problem. What I found out is because of the superbowl being in Detroit next year; is they are trying now to fix almost every road in the detroit area by the time the game is here. Well if it took this much for the state to do something about this problem; and not to mention making the city of Detroit look better; My opinion is they should have the superbowl in this state every year that way our roads and cars will last longer!!

Yeah the roads, especially downtown look like a bucket of ass.. Detroit is the only city I've seen an entire road practically covered in 1/2" steel plates to cover the 5 foot potholes Lol. I think once I saw a Chinese man sticking his head through one of the holes

I wouldnt be surprised if baseheads hide in the pot-holes.

Well personally I think it is a conspiracy. I worked for a construciton company that delt with those Calasani guys (you know the one's that get the contract oh surprise they are italian) they do hoard the work, work slow on purpose and do things to create work for themselves like NOT doing it right the first time. No one else gets any of the contracts and I'd bet their are more than a few bodies hidden in the concrete in the big 'D'.

This is one of the most crooked states I have ever lived in. Allot of states have our weather, but not our roads!!!!!

I hate working for construction companies now...just too many secrets too keep. The other day I was driving home and I hit 3 area's of construction in 10 miles. It is enough to make me consider moving out of state again. In one spot it took me 30 min to go what should have taken like 12 min.

Ahhhhh! I am going crazy.

Did you notice how the gas pumps are slowing down sooner on the count too? I know I am not getting as much gas. I don't even feel like standing there waiting for the trickle to end till I get to my full 14 dollars.

I've heard of people close to me sueing the city cuz the pot holes where so bad that it tore up their tires or rims.. maybe if that happened more often they would fix the roads and do it properly...

I think they are doing it to keep us buying cars.....this is the car manufacturing capital of the world....bad roads, broken cars, higher profits

Heyyyy, I hadn't thought of it that way. Before I just thought "Wtf? This is supposed to be car central; why do the roads suck??"

Those insidious corporations and their meddling in local government affairs!

The thing is, though, either people complain about the condition of the roads, or they complain about the construction going on to FIX the condition of the roads.

6 of one, half dozen of the other.

You know... there is an actual meteorlogical reason for why the roads are so bad in Michigan... and the cost is much higher to fix the roads in Michigan because of something called "Frost Wedging" ever heard of it?

I haven't heard it called that. But isn't that where minute cracks in the concrete end up filled with water, which then freezes and expands, making the cracks bigger and bigger until... OMG - POTHOLE!!!!!!!Eeeeeek.gif

Have you ever driven to Wonderland in the square state above (to the side and in some cases below) us?

Once you get on the roads repaved in the last 20 years, you become hard pressed to find a pot hole.

Frost wedging is an issue any place that has long term cold weather but those dam Canadian seem to have gotten something right for a change.

It's a fact, Michigan has the worst roads in this country. Our state needs to look at how others states maintain their roads and start doing things differently. It's painfully obvious that how things have been done thus far is not working right. I hate our roads.

:devil What I found out too is that this state allows twice the load limit for semi trucks than alot of other states that is also a big factor on road damage; but its not the truckers fault its the state BS laws.

shitty roads = job security in the 'motor city'...

I have heard this excuse but don't buy it do you? Common. Tell the weather just changes that drastically at the Ohio/MI or any other boarder.

My point, exactly. Hey wait, the Canadians better at us than something??? This IS an outrage.

Indiana has the same problem with weather but we tend to keep our roads pretty solid.. It's probably all in the material and building techniques that Michigan uses that fucks them over.. I don't understand why they couldn't afford to maintain their roads as well as Indiana does, especially with all those extra people to suck taxes out of in Michigan.

I'm sure the most logical explanation is dumb and/or dirty politicians dropping money in mysterious places instead of having a legit budget.

They wouldn't have to spend so much time "fixing" the roads if the contractors did it right the first time.

The overloaded trucks are a BIG part of it too... especially the gravel haulers, etc. that travel locally & never even hit weigh stations like the OTR rigs. I didn't know about the higher load limits, but I have no trouble believing it... fits perfectly w/the whole fucked up situation.

& I've been told the city of Detroit actually has a fund for paying off road-damaged vehicle claims... they don't publicize it or make it easy to get info on but it does exist.

Not only do they allow twice the load limit, but the also lay less padding below the asphalt. In most other states, companies are required by law to put 6"-8" of padding below the asphalt. In Michigan, they only require 4". That padding is a major part of why other roads stay together.

I'm all about public transport, that'd be too sensible though for Detroit and too scarey for the suburbanites. Where I live (Near Mack & Alter) we have the remnants of the last trolly station in Detroit's now gone transit system. The Building 'Ye Old Tap Room' is in was the location (just next door) and in the parking lot around back the parking spaces are seperated with chunks of the old tracks (the large hunks of wood). What happened was that the auto companies bought the trolly company and shut it down.

*Tap room is also the longest continuously open bar in Detroit. -It was a 'speak easy' durring the prohibition and actually open even before that (1916?). Below the Tap Room was an illegal gambling hall as well and above was a brothel-they still keep a red light in the window upstairs. Not a bad place, young, hip-like crowd, decent music, mostly punk and they now have a little patio. Oh and the Mid-west's largest assortment of beers and a great single-malt Scotch selection. All said, it's kind of a dive but pretty nice if it's your local and you can walk there.

Pretty much sums up the history of mass transit in Detroit... at one point they wanted to do a subway line down Woodward out into OC... I think they even had a substantial amount of fed $ towards it... and the whole project dissolved in utterly horrible political infighting.

that's interesting about the trolley station... never seen it but there's a few places on the west side where the old trolley tracks won't stay covered by asphalt... no matter how many times they pave over them the rails always wear through to the surface. You can see the old bricks they're set in & everything. The past literally surfacing in physical form...
