That was horrific. I read on yahoo news that it was human error that caused that. Apparently, he was late getting into turn 16 on the track, and tried to correct it and failed sadly.

I'd find it difficult to believe that it wasn't human error. There's not much to go wrong on a luge. Pretty simple device.

Um. A person was killed. It's not even remotely funny.

I find it hard to believe that they wear next to nothing for protective equipment. They should have some sort of safety cage on those sleds.

I think it does prove that blasting down a track with no padding at 88 mph and then coming to a complete stop is bad for a person yes... I wonder if someone has put it on failblog yet.... *sigh*

That track itself is dangerous. They left steel beams completely unprotected. I too find it difficult to believe that it was just human error that caused that guy's death.

All they have for gear is a helmet, and a spandex suit. Going down a track that fast, on a sled that small, with nothing but a helmet to protect you...you're putting your own life on the line.

THe bars should have been padded, not that it would have helped much with the speed and way he hit the bar

88 miles per hour hitting a padded bar... I agree, just as dead... but just a bit softer.

Eeesh. :X Not nearly as gory as a video of a cliff diving accident I've seen, though.

I'll bet just about every bone in that guy's body was either fractured or broken. Probably died of closed head injury/spinal injury/massive hemorrhaging. Does anyone know whether he died instantly or not? I certainly hope so.

I think he did die instantly.

They moved the men's start down to where the woman's start was supposed to be and they are still going 85-90mph. There were also a few crashes tonight.

The human error is getting involved in the sport in the first place. :-/

They just go waaay to fast these days. Whats funny is mans attempts to outdo the last guy...usually leads to death.

going that fast something is bound to happen

call me chicken shit but I wouldn't want to get on that thing even thou it looks fun.
