creatureofthenyte Posted April 16, 2011 Posted April 16, 2011 Damn, are they closing all the public schools too ? I would imagine that's the next step, if they have no teachers. I saw on the news recently, that Detroit is in big trouble financially. Largely due to a decrease in population.
Destroit Posted April 16, 2011 Author Posted April 16, 2011 I think they're not closing it down but rather down-sizing. Although they have yet to actually fully declare their intent, to me that seems to be the most logical answer. It is true that many of the teachers in DPS take advantage of the fact that they're protected by a union and slack. What makes it worse is that this type of attitude is fostered by apathetic supervisors and administration that serves to hinder any educational efforts that teachers try to put forth. The district needs reform, but the question is whether a complete flush like this is too drastic. I think they're not closing it down but rather down-sizing. Slogo Posted April 16, 2011 Posted April 16, 2011 Though I am a fairly big supporter of some unions the teachers union isn't one of them. he teachers union, for the most part, has made turned teachers into what many parents always see them as which is glorified, overpaid babysitters.
Vater Araignee Posted April 16, 2011 Posted April 16, 2011 This is the kind of thing that happens when the greedy get in charge and people don't understand the difference between a right and a privilege. Detroit has to go through a series "painful" changes to save itself but as long as those two groups equal the super minority let alone the super majority that they are then nothing less than disaster can be predicted for the city. My old neighborhood was knocked down. They didn't rezone it, it got rebuilt as residential. Now driving through it, it is practically abandoned and wile I can't say it was beautiful before we got chased out, I can say it wasn't some ugly attempt at yuppy conformity that failed.
