Risen from the dead! What's the story, this time?

Someone farted.

DGN is a creature of darkness. Death is only temporary, it always comes back as a zombie. O.O

DGN was down because there wasn't enough donations and counter intuitively not enough promotion as they go hand in hand (in the long run promotion is far more important but in the short term its donations). I spent money I didn't have to bring it back up as is often the case.

The cost of DGN actually goes down as the activity goes up, and there is a better chance of actually having people donate and a small amount of donations makes up for a large number of people that do not. Its largely my own fault as I've not done any serious promotion of DGN in a few years, my health , I've finally decided needs to come before DGN, even in the face of the people that have (privately) said I "don't do enough" for DGN or worse. Sometimes based on what the think is actually true, but just misguided.

The health issues are the main reasons I'm not as active as I should be, but there are a few key people who have a lot of energy (and are well liked) that go out of their way to smear me and DGN (and are smart enough to do it in a believable way) and that also doesn't help my motivation to keep pushing for more promotion (which is the key) or secondarily donations.

We went a long time due to a few people back many months ago donating fairly large amounts, which finally ran out. My energy to keep asking for donations is at a minimum / the "debate" about it gets frustrating. Divided among all the people that use DGN the cost is almost inconsequential per-person but unfortunately , even people that have found half their social network, or even their husbands/wives either directly or indirectly don't particularly value it enough to either help promote nor donate. (or can't donate for various reasons)

The "goal" is $80 a month but the sort of bare-minimum needed is around $40 (its not just "the hosting" as many mistakenly oversimplify it as)

so i'm curious - why is it that this time, when i tried to access dgn it said it was down for maintenance, but every other time it went down for lack of funds, it said that we had reached our bandwidth limit?

doesn't make any sense...

It makes sense when you try not to assume that the error messages actually mean what they say. Sort of like a calculator that gives the incorrect answer to 2+2, if we (somehow) knew what was going on with it, it is , in essence "working as it should" given its broken nature. As programs become more and more complex their quirks become harder and harder to make easy sense of.

I wouldn't put to much stock in "error messages" for instance the ubiquitous 404 Error could mean anything, even though its supposed to have a specific set of meanings. The "out of bandwidth" error message actually is also written incorrectly as it implies that "the owner" has used up bandwidth, when in fact its a collective problem between many users.

The hosting of DGN had gone unpaid for 7 days, which is usually the cutoff when they stop letting us slide. That was an odd error message, but it was the same "unpaid" problem, as as soon as I paid for it, the "down for maintence" message went away and the sight came right back up.

Although in the end, both the out of bandwidth problem that pops up from time to time and the usual just lack of funds for normal operations are the exact same problem, lack of donations and/or promotion (which leads to more donations.)

      About to head up to Roseville to return this rental and pick up my truck from the auto shop.  It is supposedly sporting a newly fabricated frame rail...I don't think they are referred to as "chassis" anymore as I see the confusion in shop owner's eyes when they ask me if I'm looking for "body work?".   But I do find it interesting that I told the owner that I worked direct with OEM parts and yet he still wrote me up an invoice with overpriced OEM parts from companies I used to host at the place I used to work for.  With that said, I'm expecting a stellar job for the amount I paid.   ...else, there will be some talk negotiations.

      ~~~~~ Definitely wishing you luck.  Do enjoy yourselves.   But I have to admit, the first thing that came to mind was does roadside assistance reach the desert? 😬
      ~~~~~ Yeah, it's like something happened to my metabolism this past Winter and when I came out of hibernation, that AARP Join Request started looking like something to check into.

      This 👆 definitely goes with what I said in my other post - getting old sucks. Seems like *everything* takes longer and takes more energy out of me than it used to. Really need to work on my diet and exercise, I've found the older I get, the more important those things have really become...
